Criteria as follows:

500K - 1.75Mil METRO population

I would prefer warm - semi-warm weather, but will consider cooler climates for nice cities.

Saftey, walkability, and cost are all major considerations.

No suburbs of other larger cities, unless it just has to be mentioned cause it is THAT good.

Bonuses:

Downtown/Nightlife district on the water.

Pics/video of nightlife district(s)

Historic Buildings/Loft housing

Fun year 'round.

(It is fine to go SLIGHTLY outside of the criteria listed if you really feel the city is worth mentioning)

Savannah, Georgia. It's a beautiful town, not too big, but has a lot of restaurants, and night life, considering SCAD is there and there are lots of college students.

Ft. Myers, Florida
Sarasota, Florida
Daytona Beach/Port Orange, Florida
Palm Beach, Florida or Ft. Lauderdale, Florida (Palm Beach, Ft Lauderdale, and Miami make up South Florida but each is very much its own metro with its own downtown, its own nightlife, its own airport, its own newspapers, and its own distinct style)

not *quite* all your criteria.

How about Fort Lauderdale or Sarasota, FL?

Santa Cruz or Monterrey, CA?

Possibly Key West or just South FL in general... there are dozens of "small beach communities with night life"

I think your biggest issue is the metro pop...

Wilmington, NC can be surprisingly fun for a small coastal city. Its party district is on the Cape Fear River and can be a lot of fun. I have actually been in a cool loft condo in DT Wilmington and the immediate area felt surprisingly cosmopolitan for a such a small city.
