Austin is the 'Live Music Capital', so it's doubtful that Seattle would be able to compare in that category. In terms of overall scene - i.e. diversity of genre options/local scene; touring acts coming into - which wins out?

"Live Music Capital" is self-appointed title that doesn't prove anything. Both cities have a lot of live music, although Austin has a greater concentrations of live music in one area. Seattle has more live music spread across neighborhoods in the city. Overall, Austin probably does have more live music, but Seattle is no slouch. To me, though, New Orleans is the realy Live Music Capitol.

As for overall music scene, it depends on what kind of music you like. Both have a their share of indie rock, but Austin has a stronger rootsy/bluesy scene (that scene exists in Seattle, just not as prominent). Seattle has a better jazz scene.

Seattle peaked in the 90's (for now). Austin is the live music capital of the nation (or the world as they would say) and hosts the epic SXSW festival.

Austin wins big.

Seattle is the home of Grunge & Alternative Rock.

I'm gonna have to go with Seattle on this one.

Seattle. Austin may be dubbed live music capitol of the world, but they still don't have the influence Seattle does.

Sub Pop has been and still is the most influential indie record label in the country. Seattle is still a place that "makes" bands more than Austin.

Not trying to not get jumped on either. Austin has a stellar music scene, but come one its Seattle we are talking about.

I really wasn't that impressed with Seattle's live music scene. Certainly not bad, but not all that amazing. Culturally, for it's size anyway, more is going on in Portland than Seattle these days. Austin hands down.

There may be a lot of musicians in Austin's two square mile radius, but are they any good? I say nah they aren't and no matter what the place is still in Texas. It's Texas.

I think each city has its strengths in different genres of music. But I think Austin has the stronger music scene overall.

Jimi Hendrix > Stevie Ray Vaughan

Seattle wins.

I love both cities, but Austin can't touch Seattle when it comes to music. I am stumped to think of anyone beyond SVR and Willie for Austin. Meanwhile Seattle has produced Hendrix, Heart, The Ventures, Quincy Jones, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, members of GNR & Motley Crue, Sir-Mix-a-lot, and numerous others.
