Only 125,000 people in LA County (out of a labor force of almost 5,000,000) are directly employed by the motion picture industry.
makes sense though I would suspect there is more if looses ties are made. That said Philly relies to heavially (esp in the DT) on Meds and Eds and Law Firms
I like both places. to me a similarity is both places retain an edge

For sure--this doesn't count "indirect" and "induced" employment. There are probably 100,000 or so more people who work in support roles and aren't directly employed in the production of movies.
Still, it's clear that there is a lot more going on in LA than movie-making.

The longer I live in LA the more I discover how amazing and fascinating this city is. From Catalina Island, the canals in Venice to the hidden steps in Echo Park and Silverlake, LA has become my favorite american city. The fake and plastic comments that continue to come up are just ridiculous and all I can do is shake my head.
very true. both cities are similar in that sense..
there's more than what's on the surface, gotta poke around
I feel like Philly still needs to find its global appeal. Visiting the city last summer, it was a nice experience but a visitor who doesn't take the time to explore still gets the impression it's all Ben Franklin, cheese-steaks and Philly sports teams. They're making themselves into a world center for the arts with PMOA, Barnes and Rodin museums all moving into the same neighborhood, and it's become a craft beer mecca for those who like that kind of thing, but at least right now there still isn't enough for it to differentiate itself from the other East Coast cities. In that sense, it's still just a larger version of Baltimore.
