^^^Atlanta is more economically diverse than DFW. The main reason is that Atlanta has many more government jobs than Dallas. Being the capital of Georgia, that is rightfully so.

I was talking about diversity and integration of people, in which the stats show DFW has the edge.

If it wasn't for DFW's growth in population and in jobs, Atlanta will be best of the 2. However, DFW is beter by a hair based upon its growth, IMO.

ENERGY SECTOR

Ever heard of XTO energy it’s a major power player when it comes to Natural gas in the United States. DFW also sit under the Barnett Shale a major gas producing field. DFW could dub itself King of the Natural Gas industry but they choose not too. Exxon is still based in DFW even if its dirty work is done down in Houston.

GDP/ Economy / Unemployment

GDP is relevant in the discussion because it’s one of DFW strengths. Simply put Atlanta isn't even in the same class as DFW in economic output. Dallas economy and housing market is forecast to boom well before Atlanta's. Besides Atlanta unemployment rates sits at 10.2 % even with having the advantage being the state capital of GA, which provides a significant amount of jobs for Atlantans. You can pride yourself on having a diverse economy all you want but a 10.2% unemployment rate only proves ATL at this point doesn't provide enough jobs for its 5.8 million residents.

LOCATION and TRANSPORTATION

I know Atlanta prides itself on location but its interesting to find a big chunk of those California business have relocated to DFW. Maybe DFW centrailize location plays a major part in its ability to attract corporations. Yes Atlanta is home to the world busiest airport but DFW fourth busiest and also home to two major airlines Southwest Airlines and American Airlines.

Quote from Copart’s CEO who will be relocating to DFW from California

“This change will position us closer to our customers geographically, resulting in improved customer service and greater operational efficiencies,” said Jay Adair, Copart’s CEO.

BNSF Railway moves more intermodal freight traffic than any other rail system in the world.

Dallas/ Fort Worth is now a major gateway for distribution of goods to the major population centers of the central and eastern United States. The plan is to become the largest inland logistic hubs in the United States.

Techonology/ Telecommunication

Well Texas Instruments is nothing to sneeze at. It provides over 27,100 jobs that’s a pretty substantial number. It’s the number 1 supplier of digital signal processors, number 2 supplier of cellular phone chips, and number 4 manufacturers of semiconductors worldwide.

AT&T is the 7th largest company in the United States by total revenue, as well as the 4th largest non-oil company in the US

Soda Industry

Yes and like Atlanta with so many people moving here before the recession for jobs,Dallas has people still moving there.Do you think the unemployment rate in Dallas will be 8.5 in a year.I willing to bet Dallas and Houston will go up as Atlanta and other cities go down in Unemployment as more people move to Dallas because like Atlanta was,its the land of "
mil and honey".The two cities will be much closer than they are now.GDP is only relevant to how fast it is growing, shrinking and diversifying.
Does this mean Dallas has a better future than Paris or L.A. too? Both have higher unemployment rates. But i have no problem giving this cat. to DAL

All of those companies have moved to Atlanta from another city within the last 5 yrs except Newell Rubber maid which was about 10 years ago. There are at least 2 or 3 more but I cannot remember who they were at the moment.

Atlanta:Described as the largest inland port in the world, Atlanta has a long history as a trade crossroads and its growth has been linked to its role as a transportation and distribution center. As a hub for container and bulk distribution, Atlanta has doubled its intermodal capabilities over the last several years. CSX and Norfolk Southern are the Class 1 railroad freight carriers serving Georgia. With the 1988 federal designation of the General Purpose Foreign Trade Zone #26 in Atlanta, containers can travel inbound from the coast to the U.S. Customs office in Atlanta. Each line operates significant intermodal facilities in Atlanta.

Okay first of all people, this is infuriating, stop bringing Houston (and other cities) into everything. I don't want to see Houston's name (or any other city) at all in this thread. This is about Dallas/Fort Worth & Atlanta, and lets keep at just those two. I don't care what the devil your excuses are, try to make intelligent and relevant posts, not useless ones and try to stick to the damn cities in the discussion.

Next, neither of these cities are coming close to being an Energy Capital, Finance Capital, or Entertainment Capital, so that argument has nothing to it. So you're saying it has more manufacturing potential of Chemical Petroleum than Southeast Texas? Talk about what Dallas is good at, against Atlanta. As for GDP, talk amongst yourselves to see if all of you agree if it's the best measure or not to the economic realm and influence of a city. We're talking about what these two cities are good at, lets try to keep it that way without involving other cities.

Thank you, I'll request the closure of the thread if it gets off topic, and I will report people who decide to take this into an off topic argument. I want a real thread that sticks to the topic, not a witch hunt.

afonega1, thanks for the post, but could you elaborate on future term economic policies from Atlanta?

We tend to place a lot of attention on fortune 500 companies but lets expand it to fortune 1000 companies.

DFW has 45 fortune 1000 companies
ATL has 22 fortune 1000 companies

So DFW has double the amount of fortune 1000 companies. This is a good indicator of how the two metro will stack up in future when the economy gets back rolling.

I dont think you have correct data on Delta vs. American/Southwest. In fact, the statement is dead wrong.

In 2010, Delta transported about 163,000,000 passengers. American transported, about 105,000,000 and Southwest transported 131,000,000.

As you can see Delta is not more than double the size of American and Southwest.
