I also hear that New Jersey has one of the lowest rates of driving under the influence. I am willing to be it has something to do with the transit system in New Jersey or there is some system in place where anyone who is drunk can get home without driving.

Public Transportation is one factor, but another is that NJ only sells alcohol in liquor stores. Meaning you can't get alchol at a convenient store or grocery store (unless the grocery store has a liquor store inside) where in most states, you can get a beer at a gas station quick stop.

I thought it was entertaining reading myself.....and made one think a bit about the differences between states.

That could be part of it. I know in Georgia, I can get alcohol at the grocery store and at gas stations. My 21st birthday, I bought my first beer at the grocery store. The first time I became a mugging victim, I was trying to buy beer at a gas station.
I also live near my university(15-20 minutes walk from the student center). There are 4 gas stations nearby. The one I live nearby has alot of people coming just before midnight buying alot of beer. This particular gas station has had its liquor license suspended at least twice to selling alcohol to minors. There is also quite a bit of drunk driving where I live. Much of it having to do with a high percentage of college students living nearby. Strangely, in Georgia, you can't buy alcohol on Sunday. Maybe the Sunday thing is part of why Georgia was ranked among the most virtuous states. I was kind of surprised because I see some heavy drinking where I live. On the other hand, it's kind of hard to get porn in Georgia, no gambling anywhere, expect the lottery. No buying alcohol on Sunday either. What happens is alot people stock up on alcohol on Saturday. Atlanta-based Chick-Fil-A doesn't do business on Sunday.

Alot of people's impression of New Jersey is either Newark or Atlantic City. Futhermore, what is most often represented on TV is The Sopranos or Jersey Shore. Alot of people don't understand that New Jersey is more than that. For those out there who don't know this already, part of the Appalachians goes through New Jersey, as does part of the Appalachian trail. New Jersey hasn't had an execution in almost 5 decades and former Governor Corzine abolished the death penalty in New Jersey as of 2007. New Jersey ranked number 30 in violent crime rate as of 2008. New Jersey's murder rate as of 2009 was 3.7 per 100,000, below the national average of 5 per 100,000.
Is it just me, or do the top 10 "vice" states seem like a hell of a lot more fun than the top 10 "virtue" states?
