Skyline: Chicago is the best, followed by Atlanta then Boston
Safety: San Francisco is the safety
Historical: Boston and Chicago
Weather: San Francisco
Housing Quality: Sunbelt cities have newer housing stock so I'd say Atlanta, Dallas and, Houston
Public Transit: Chicago then Boston, followed by San Francisco then Atlanta and Dallas.

Historical Boston by far. Not close whatsoever.

Skyline Easily Chicago.

Housing Quality Not too sure what you mean by "housing quality". If you mean by architecture, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco are tops. In terms of costs Houston, Dallas and Atlanta would take that.

SAFETY Boston by a pretty healthy margin. San Francisco city proper has better stats than Boston city proper, but overall I think Boston is far and away the safest city out of these groups.

According to 2009 stats, San Francisco/Oakland had 150 murders with a population of about 1.2 million.

Chicago had 458, 2.8 million people
Dallas 166, 1.29 million people
Houston 287, 2.1 million people
Atlanta 80, 510,000 people.

Comparatively, Boston & 16 surrounding cities had 1,500,000 people and only 62 total murders in 2009.

Weather San Francisco has the best weather of any of these.

Other:
Mass Transit Boston and Chicago would probably be tied for this one. Followed by San Francisco then Atlanta. Houston and Dallas don't qualify.

Well first you should give some information. Why would you be going to these cities? Are you in college? Out of college? Are you single, etc, etc?

I ask this because there are tons of great neighborhoods in the cities listed, but different neighborhoods will appeal to different people.

For example, I live in Allston Brighton...it's a fantastic neighborhood packed with young professionals. There are tons of bars, etc. but if you're 40 and have a wife & and a kid, it probably won't appeal to you.

Since you are buying, it seems crazy not to consider price carefully.

$350k in Atlanta (and probably Houston and Dallas) can buy a big, brand new 2BR/2BA in a trendy part of town, way up in a highrise. $350k in San Francisco would get you basically nothing--a comparable to the one described in Atlanta might be $750k or more. Boston and Chicago are somewhere in between. Salaries are higher in higher cost of living cities, but not by enough of a margin to support like $300k more mortgage debt.

Quality of housing isn't what's really important. Every city has brand new stuff and hellholes. It's what $x buys you in one city compared to another. In other words, what's an amazing skyline worth if you can't afford to have a house that looks out at it?

And only 6 murders in the city this year so far. Of course one murder is too much but if this keeps up, we are on pace for about 25 citywide homicides for the year.

Yea, I really hope the pace stays this way. It would be fantastic for the city, especially after last years abysmal stats.

History - Boston

Duh.

Skyline - Chicago

Duh.

Housing quality - Chicago

Houses in Chicago are newer than those in Boston, not as subprime as those in Atlanta, and feature a greater variety of age and style than both.

Safety - Boston

Atlanta has a very high crime rate, and Chicago has more rough edges than Boston.

Weather - Chicago

All four seasons are amplified in Chicago. Of course, if you're a wuss, then you'd probably prefer Atlanta's weather.
