I'm scots-Irish. I love bluegrass. I've had the real Mountain dew, and I love the soda to boot. Banjo is my favorite stringed instrument. I grew up extremely poor, very rural, and in the Appalachian foothills in upstate New York.

Am I a hillbilly?

"Scary" hillbillies? Are you kidding me? If you're lost or in trouble in a small mountain town, anyone you meet - anyone - will go out of their way to help you in any way they can. Who cares if they have a gun rack in their truck? I'm not from the south, but I'm offended by the whole concept of "scary" hillbillies. You're mixing up Southern Mountaineers (what most people refer to as hillbillies) with rednecks. They're not the same thing, by any stretch of imagination.

Bless your heart, you'd better stay out of New Orleans. Banjo is a major element of early jazz music.

Then I guess northern New England must be hillbilly country then.

There are all kinds of bluegrass, fiddling, banjo playing festivals and events in VT, NH, and ME. While we were in Maine, we attended this festival:

Saddleback Maine, host of the Saddleback Mountain Bluegrass Festival in the Rangeley Lakes Region

Despite its negative connotations, I quite like the sounds of a banjo.
