I'm going to NYC next month. I want to do a side trip.
I can't decide between DC or Boston?

I've seen the Mall and Capitol, so that doesn't matter to me. But, Ive never seen the non-Mall DC.

Coming from the sunbelt, I'm primarily interested in the "city" aspects of each. Urban life, busy sidewalks, architecture, civic squares, shopping.

When I saw the thread title, my first thought was "DC", because of all the museums & free attractions. But after reading your post, my answer is Boston, because IMO it has a more interesting & fine-textured urbanism.

when you get tired on looking at museums and historic monuments which both cities have, boston has more to do: shopping, eating, clubs etc, because it is more a real city.

Boston. The food alone would make this an easy one for me.

Gotta go with Boston for that. Plus, you haven't been there I take it. So it's a no-brainer.

Go to Boston. And after walking the Freedom Trail, you can take a stroll down Blue Hill Avenue for some real urban "life".

Honestly though, Boston is a nice city to visit (and live), but it is expensive. At least DC has great, free, museums, yet both offer some of the best insight into early American history.

And, DC, in my opinion, is more diverse. If that matters for "urban life" criteria.

Dude, why don't you visit Philadelphia instead? It's cheaper AND a lot closer to NYC than DC and Boston. Philly is the 2nd largest city on the east coast, for that you will have absolutely no problem getting that big city experience. Plus, Philly has one of the best downtowns in America and history that rivals Boston.

So why not? I think its much more convenient, a serious bargain if you will. It has pretty much everything you listed.

Philly s a great city, but I think Boston & DC are better for tourists.
