I see what you're getting at. No, West Indian hasn't become trendy, but that doesn't mean there aren't upscale West Indian places nor that you necessarily have to go deep into Brooklyn.

Flatbush and Crown Heights don't seem that removed to me.

I would say Santa Fe- where you will get the most authentic and delicious Mexican food. Santa Fe offers all mexican cuisines in one place.

Can't forget La Taqueria either, which is my personal favorite (been there since the 70s)...Farolito probably matches it actually due to lower prices and a larger menu, but LA Taqueria has better Carne Asada IMO, and the best damn green hot sauce you will ever have. Pancho Villa is pretty good too. Also, the Super Taqueria chain in the south bay kicks ass as well, as does this one chain in San Diego that i can't remember the name of (you know your state has lots of Mexicans when even the local mexican chain restaurants tend to be good). I've also had some of the best mexican food ever when I was in Salinas, and Desert Hot Springs. That's one thing i like about states like CA, AZ, NM, TX, etc: you can find really good Mexican food even in small cities, or towns in the middle of nowhere.

And i shouldn't have posted in this thread while hungry.
There is also an El Faralito on 4th Street in San Rafael now, but its only fair. No questions asked, the best one is the one on 24th and Mission.

Not so sure I agree with that. While the New Mexican cuisine in Santa Fe is beyond delicious (far better than Tex-Mex or Cal-Mex), for authentic Mexican, Santa Fe isn't the place to look. The best cities are those with the largest number of foreign born Mexicans in them: LA, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, San Diego, El Paso, San Antonio, and the Bay Area.

Now if you want to Tex-Mex or Cal-Mex, that may be a different answer.

Houston is home to the birthplace of fajitas at The Original Mama Ninfa's on Navigation and you can't beat their creamy green sauce either.

Who actually ever been to Mexico to eat there food? Yea, Santa Fe's food is the tastiest but it's as Mexican as Panda Express is real Chinese. You want authentic Mexican food. El Paso and LA wins this hands down. Chicago....why?
