As far as congestion, there are other variables I may have forgotton, but it seems to be a main reason, along with taxes, as to why suburban sprawl continues to explode. Most congested overall (not just traffic)

NEW YORK

To me DC and LA are worse than Chicago which is also bad.

Most large cities/metros have their bad areas for traffic

@ HTown I am surprised 202 S is the 4th worst in the country, doesnt seem it to me. 76 East or West between CC and KOP seems far worse than 202 S - even 422 seems worse to me than 202

LA and Houston KILL Chicago. Try sitting in traffic for 2 hours trying to get across town when it should really only take 30 minutes.

And Chicago's actually made huge strides in the past 8 years as well. The tollway authority spent $6.3 billion dollars rebuilding and widening over 100 miles of tollway from the ground up. Most of the roads went from 6 or 8 lanes to 8 to 12 lanes. They constructed a 12 mile exension of I-355 and put in open-road tolling so people don't have to slow down or stop to pay tolls anymore.

They just instituted another $12 billion dollar plan to build more tollways around O'hare, build new interchanges where interstates meet, complete and widen another expressway through the west suburbs, and widen I-90 from 4 to 6 lanes to 6 to 10 lanes all the way to Rockford.

They've widened and rebuilt the Stevenson and the Dan Ryan Expressways in the past 10 years, and just got done on a massive overhaul of I-80 through the south suburbs. The road use to be 6 lanes wide in many areas and was backed up for MILES every single day. They rebuilt it from the ground up, and instead of 6 or 8 lanes, it's up to 14 lanes wide in some places.

The only really killer expressways now for stopped traffic are I-290, I-55, I-94/90 (the Kennedy) as well as portions of the Edens. Basically the 4 big expressways leading out of downtown are a mess.

The burbs have gotten much better with the widening of the tollway network.

It's not even logical what goes on in Houston. They keep expanding the freeways, and expanding, and expanding, and it doesn't matter.
