So just for kicks lets have a hypothetical discussion about these three cities (or choose one/two if you'd like) and their future in 19-20 years. Three very different cities all with a questionable future for sustainability where many different things are possible. I pick these three because they seem to have some challenging prospects ahead of them.

Detroit and Las Vegas are going to have to find a way to reinvent themselves. The potential is there for Detroit with plenty of water, perhaps restoration of its urban bones along with perhaps (and hopefully) new industries and infrastructure. Las Vegas is also going to have to rethink new ideas for a sustainable economy as clearly real estate, excessive consumerism, and gambling have all bottomed out.

Los Angeles and Las Vegas will be challenged with water resources in the future. What direction will that go in? Also Los Angeles has nearly hit its limits in sprawl and is already taking on more urban infill and constructing more urban rail transit. Will that be successful? What will downtown LA look like? Will the heavy rail subway to the sea be completed? What will Southern California be like with High Speed Rail in place?

Go ahead and use your imagination, or perhaps examples from urban planning from other cities in the world, learning from past success and failures.
