I was excited to read this thread because I love Louisville, but I've never been to Knoxville. However, it seems like nobody has anything meaningful to say.

Louisville is one of my favorite cities because it has great restaurants, fun bars, lots of great music, and some cool architecture (the old Georgian mansions in Old Louisville and the cute modest houses elsewhere in the city). I like how it has a fun, hip vibe with out the snobbish, condescending attitude that comes with other hip areas.

People in Louisville seemed educated and worldly, but again very approachable, outgoing, and non-judgmental.

How does Knoxville compare?

I'm also obsessed with fresh produce. How's Knoxville in terms of farmers markets and stuff?

Louisville has a great neighborhood commercial district, one of the best I've seen. Knoxville has a better downtown, with historic office buildings converted to lofts, lots of activity evening/weekends. Market square is a unique pedestrian plaza, Gay st is filling up with shops, bars & restaurants.

I imagine you'd find great produce both places. Knoxville has several farmers markets, a food co-op, and natural food chains. Louisville has more & better restaurants.

Knoxville is near the Smokies. And a bit closer to the beach.

Knoxville is smaller but has much prettier terrain imo. Both cities are growing with strong economies and a plethora of attractions. Louisville is more sophisticated and doesn't give the same southern vibe as Knoxville. It is artsy, eclectic, and progressive while Knoxville is more conservative, sports oriented, and sprawly. Knoxville experiences all four seasons and is a bit milder in the winter than Louisville. Knoxville is real basic and laid back, which is not a negative thing.

It's hard to beat the fall color in the smokies, and because of the elevation change you can experience it over a longer period of time.

Louisville will get more snow.

Nor Cal Doc, did you move here yet? lol

Lousiville is better by far. I have lived in Knox for a year now and visited Louisville 2 weeks ago, i enjoyed it. A bit quicker paced has a slight Indiana flavor which is very close. The downtown is nicer. The people seemed happier and more friendly IMO in Kentucky. I would pick Louisville. I am looking into either going to Louisville or back out to Calif. will see. I miss the ocean.

Good luck with whatever decision you made by now.

I'd definitely choose Louisville - bigger, a lot more to do, and really punches above its weight class. Knoxville is okay, but is a lot more limited culturally excluding the university IMO.

I always thought Knoxville punched below its weight. For a 1.1 million CSA, Knoxville lacks the amenities of similar sized metros such as Little Rock, Birmingham, Richmond, etc. Adding Gatlinburg helps round things out a bit more, but the city should do more to build up its downtown. The city is slowly progressing, however.
