Philly has been ranked consistently as the "least attractive city" in terms of it's residents by readers of Travel and Leisure magazine so the term "vain" must mean something else in Philly, which I'm going to guess is the infamous Philly homerism...

Yes, because clearly Travel + Leisure is based on strict scientific methodology.
Oh, wait...
Also, if Philly happens to rank in the Top 5 in terms of self-reported attractiveness along with cities like Chicago, Atlanta and Phoenix, why is it that Philly should be singled out for "infamous homerism," pray tell?
As cpomp noted, if anything, this poll has to do with self esteem. Feeling good about the way you look, so long as its not accompanied by douchery, is not a bad thing.

Travel and Leisure's poll is based on observation of frequent travelers which does not have a basis in scientific methodology, only perception which is how one assesses attractiveness overall...correct?
My point was that Philly's version of self reporting had less to do with actual attractiveness versus self-perceived worth. I agree feeling good about one's self is a good thing until it reaches delusional status, which is where non-objective homerism steps in. My experiences from living there and reading many a post from Philly residents reinforces that belief.

Exactly. It is quite literally a case of beauty being in the eye of the beholder, and -- in my mind -- a silly and effectively useless measure.

Aside from delusional postings (which, let's be real, are hardly limited to Philadelphia-based posters), your experience is just one of many. My personal experience having lived in the Philly area most of my life is quite the opposite; Philadelphians can be quite a self-deprecating bunch. I assure you that the excessive "boosterism" that you perceive of Philly on this board is really just an online phenomenon.
Vanity and attractiveness are two different things. Vanity is how important a person (or persons) considers their physical appearance 24/7. Vanity I suppose could be measured by how much time, money, and effort people spend per capita on their appearance. Hair, (including high-end salons catering to men), manicures, facials, cosmetic surgery, designer apparel (including high end shoes and accessories), jewelry, etc., and perhaps the percentage of people in public (movies, grocery stores, restaurants, offices, walking areas, etc,) who appear to be highly coiffed. Attractiveness is another matter entirely.

Try the opposite. Atlanta is southern, filled with Wal Marts and Waffle Houses.
