Well they are always close. When you combine L' and Metra, Chicago is usually right there. As Chicago continues to build ridership, it should lead this year. D.C. will pull way ahead next year when the silver line opens though.
Here is Q2 2011:
DC Metro = 1,023,500
Chicago L' = 708,300
Metra = 306,600
Total = 1,014,900
Obviously if you add D.C.'s VRE and Marc commuter rail, then D.C.'s numbers are even higher but we were only putting all of Chicago's systems against D.C.'s metro system by itself. http://www.apta.com/resources/statis...rship-APTA.pdf
Totally not trying to be petty, but if you throw in the SouthShore trains it puts you ahead by a few thousand over DC :-X

LOL...ok that's cool. I guess DC will have to bring in reinforcements from MARC and VRE. I thought we wouldn't have to use them but it seems we are out numbered....lol. That should give us a sizeable lead. Your move....

Soon Minneapolis will be on of the best, they are currently working on light rail systems that go all around the cities, connect it to St. Paul, run though the U of M campuses, and they will extend all the way up to the northern suburbs 40 miles away!

I LOVE the SouthShore... the only surviving interurban; a throwback to intercity transit in the olden days... It's an American treasure.
