Expanding on the Seattle vs Houston thread, and which feels 'bigger', I thought I'd try to rank American cities by how big their downtown areas feel (which isn't necessarily the CBD). Feel free to comment/agree/disagree and list your own ranking. As a comparison I'll list the top ten MSA's by population alongside.

First, by population:

1. New York
2. Los Angeles
3. Chicago
4. Dallas
5. Philadelphia
6. Houston
7. Miami
8. Washington
9. Atlanta
10. Boston

Now, which cities downtown feels subjectively the biggest:

1. New York (obviously)
2. Chicago
3. Philadelphia
4. San Francisco
5. Seattle
6. Boston
7. Washington
8. Miami
9. Atlanta
10. Houston

By 'biggest' I don't mean, how sprawling the metro seems, but, if you're in downtown, how bustling it seems, how Manhattanesque for want of a better word!

I think this makes sense though to me Boston, SF, and Philly are maybe too close to differentiate, I would also have probably put Seattle behind DC and the three mentioned earlier. Also to me LA would be above Atlanta, Houston, Miami and Dallas. But to your point overall this a pretty decent list

While LA's downtown has improved, I think the other cities still have strong cores, especially Miami (I'm counting Miami Beach as a secondary downtown, though).

Dont disagree but downtown LA is pretty impressive actually, to me still ahead of those I noted earlier

Honorable mentions should be to places like Detroit, Minneapolis, KC, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Denver

NYC's downtown should be in a different tier

Yeah you may be right, LA is probably starting to feel like a 'proper' city which will only continue as it's public transportation (slowly) improves!
