The United States has sent more than 500 Olympians to London. Ranging from 15 to 54 years of age, they'll compete in almost every Olympic sport.

The map above shows the "hometown" metros where the Olympians grew up. The largest number – 9 percent (43 athletes) – are from Los Angeles; 3.6 percent (17) are from the Bay Area, 3 percent (14) are from greater New York; and 2.3 percent (11) from Dallas. Four metros claim ten athletes each (2 percent): Tampa, San Diego, Atlanta and Miami.

Smaller metros rise to the top when we control for population. Now, Rochester, New York, leads the way with 1.7 athletes per 100,000 people followed by Great Falls (1.2), Cheyenne (1.1), Fairbanks (1.0), and Boulder (1.0)...

Agreed. LA is the Olympian capitol. There is no doubt we should get another Olympics.

Yeah, maybe in about 30-40 years. LA has already hosted twice, and I think other cities around the world deserve it.

While I'd like to see LA host again, I think other cities should get the opportunity. It's cool how many Olympians come from or live in this area though.

Thats an awesome graphic! Amazing to see so many athletes from California - wonderful. Also good to see Ohio perform well, especially Northeast. No Columbus though :/

A lot of Great Lakes athletes seem to come from the smaller cities too, not just the large cities. Taking a look at Michigan you can see it very well.

Go USA! Thanks for posting this.

I happen to agree.

London is the first city to host 3 summer olympic games. Los Angeles would do an incredible job.

PS Anyone else agree that London's opening ceremony was a hot mess? I was a bit let down. I loved the Queen's entrance tho. lol
