Is there any cities where older kids can still be kids and play outside, ride bikes, play in the woods and roam the neighborhood? (In my town kids are staring at screens all day and rarely go outdoors)
I doubt it. I first noticed in about 1985, when I drove back roads from Kansas City to New Orleans in the summer time, going through all the towns, and I never saw one single child outdoors, the whole trip. Here at home, I can go through the whole summer without seeing a single school-age child anywhere not accompanied by parents.
In fact, I was shocked just this week, when I was walking home from the supermarket, and four little girls about 5-8 were in the middle of the street, and they came running to meet me. They were handing out flyers for a neighbor's lost dog. Quite honestly, they seemed deliriously happy to be out on their own, and to even interact with a live human being, even on a 96 degree afternoon. They were having a wonderful time. They were chatty and talkative. I thought I was in a time warp.
I'm 20 years old but I already feel like I'm going to start yelling at kids to get off my lawn.
Nowadays, with everything on mobile devices like Iphones and Ipads, kids are more likely to go outside. If they don't have a mobile device, then they're more likely to stay inside. At least from what I can gather.
I think people in general are not into the outdoors as much as before. People in towns all over America are into screens from TV, Smart Phones, PC's and Laptops.
But is there anywhere left where kids still play outdoors?
I agree...I see kids outside all of the time in my neighborhood and it ranges from those in elementary school through high school.
