Philadelphia. Chestnut hill, UC, Manyyunk, Mount airy, and Northern Libertys just to name a few. I believe that chestnut hill is one of the best in the countrys. The stone grounds that olde apartments. And everything else.

From my experience and visits I think Chicago and SF. Boston is a third with DC fourth. NYC would be 1 if we could could include it.

Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto, Boston, Vancouver, and Montreal.

I've never been to Montreal but have heard and seen enough.

San Francisco -- North Beach, Nob/Russian Hill, The Haight, Inner Sunset, Noe Valley, The Castro, Cow Hollow, Cole Valley, The Fillmore, Pacific Heights, Laurel Heights, The Mission, etc.

All are distinct and interesting. What's amazing is that all are within fairly easy walking distance from one another, too. I especially like how, even though there's a definite cohesion to the architectural styles, an observant person can instantly know when he has crossed from one neighborhood to another here. The people, pulse and sensory cues of each are easily definable.

I spent my first six months walking around this city for miles upon miles every night after work, with my mouth hanging open. Such a beautiful and interesting place, with so many layers and textures at the neighborhood level -- stuff you could never see on a tour bus.

SF is a magical place. It shines even brighter when taken in on foot, in one of the great neighborhoods.

I agree. I really think SFand Chicago are neck in neck. IMO Chicago, NYC and SF are definitely the top three in the country for neighborhoods, no matter how you rank them, but they are top 3 for sure!

I've always thought of them as the top 3 cities in the US. Their ties go beyond just neighborhoods lol.

San Francisco the best west of the Rockies, Chicago the best between the Rockies and Appalachians, and NYC the best east of the Appalachians. Three superb cities IMO!
