What's Santa Fe like compared to Southern California, San Diego, specifically? From the pictures, it looks somewhat similar. Some of the pictures remind me of Balboa Park:
Wow. You are comparing Apples and Oranges. Hard to find one similar thing about San Diego and Santa Fe. I'm from SoCal, and I lived in SFe for a year. I'll list the things about both. San Diego: beautiful warm SoCal climate. Beaches close by to get to even if you live inland. Urban sprawl. Nightclubs, hangouts, great restaurants and music, clubs, young people, multicultural colleges and universities full of young adults, teachers, college academics, surfing, huge boating community, beaches, year round outdoor sports. Walk everywhere because the weather is so pleasant every day, Unbelievable young toned bodies everywhere, beautiful clean cars and boats, Crowded, traffic, tourists crawling like ants on a cake in summer, Progressive cultural growth, theatre, movies, music. Very little rain, clouds, or inclement weather. Lots of California towns to drive to on the weekends for getaways. Got all this? Okay, now for Santa Fe: Let's start with weather: Hot, parched, unrelenting daily baking sun every day in summer - with no AC in most homes. Must wear hats and cover up, very little urban anything here, most people are into the "natural" hippy thing - no makeup, no hair color or hair cuts, long braids, and most cars are unwashed because of all the dust, and a wreck. People drive like maniacs and most people don't even bother fixing the fender benders anymore. NO rain. Little tiny "storms" for about a month in August, which they still like to call "monsoons"...LOL because they haven't seen a real monsoon in years. Very little seasonal transition from hot hot hot - to cold cold cold. Very Windy in the spring, like gale force sometimes in March and part of April. Fall is nice, but so is Fall everywhere. Baby boomers make up most of the town, young people have nowhere to go after 9 pm when everything closes and you can't get anything to eat anywhere. One theatre venue, one opera venue with some pop shows appearing there a couple of times at the end of the season, lots of art galleries and artists, skiing in the winter, hiking in the mountains if you can take extreme hot and cold in the summer and winter months, lack of medical care - hard to find a primary care physician who takes new patients, have to go to Albequerque regularly for things they don't have in Santa Fe, like a MAC store, or large department store like Nordstrom, or popular chain stores. The little tiny town of Taos, or the city of Albequerque (around 15 degrees hotter than Santa Fe in the summer) is about the only place you can drive to for a getaway to a major town or city unless you spend 7 hours going to Denver. I'd say these 2 places are diametrically opposed...like a City Rat and a Country Mouse.
You won't find many fountains in Santa Fe....it's been in a drought for years.....if you have a fountain or a pool or a lawn that needs to be watered, you are personna non grata.
That's like comparing New York City to El Paso. Two totally different cities that cannot be compared. San Diego is better in every way. The only thing Santa Fe has going for it is a lower cost of living and a vibrant Spanish/Native American culture.

Santa Fe's COL isn't that low compared to the rest of the state. Other than that, I definitely agree that it's ridiculous to compare the two in just about every way.
Santa Fe has a MSA of 144k people while SD's is 3.1 million so there is not much of a comparison to be had between the two cities.
