I can rattle off probably half a dozen things that stand out in people's memory prominently. What I don't get is why other cities don't get the same publicity for their terrible fans. Everyone knows Eagles fans threw snowballs at Santa in the 60s. Who knows that Broncos fans threw frozen batteries at referees in the 90s? Everyone knows Eagles fans cheered when Michael Irvin got injured in 1998. Who knows that KC Chiefs fans cheered when Matt Cassel got injured last week? Veterans Stadium was known for having a jail in the basement. Did anyone know that The Meadowlands, and a handful of other stadiums also had jails in the basements?

I don't get it. Is it because Philly was a city of self-loathing for the last half of the 20th century? Is it because Philly is the 3rd largest media market in the NFL, and the Eagles one of the oldest and most popular teams? I donno. What I do know is the city is finally back to respecting itself again, the Negadelphians are being drowned out.

Anyway, I have to go with what I know, so I picked the Birds. My favorite quote, "If you put a Martian in Philadelphia on a Monday in autumn, it'd know within 5 minutes whether the Eagles won or lost."

Are you implying the Vet was one of the most decrepit facilities in professional sports before it was demolished?

Im a Ranger fan, so the rep is rightfully bestowed IMO.

Philly is an Eagles and Flyers town.

Ive been to the Vet many years ago. Its was ****, but Red Sox and Cubs fans still show up.

Id say it more or less correlates with the good team.

I've been to many Cowboy games around the country and that game was unforgettable. The ugliness in the fans came out that day. Complete sore losers.

Youre aware of Raiders and Bills fans, right?

Cubs draw because of Wrigley Field, not because of the product on the field.

One difference I'd also like to point out, is that a lot of the times, at least with my beloved Yankees, the seats that are empty arent the seats your typical diehard fan sits in. Its the $2500 seats behind home plate that no one can afford. The bleachers and cheaper seats, on the other hand, are filled to the brim with rowdy and loyal fans (see bald vinny/bleacher creatures at Yankee Stadium).

The point is, between my original point of there being a large capacity range amongst stadiums and the ridiculous ever-rising cost of admission, take these attendance numbers with a grain of salt. This will mean you have to look at other factors that are more subjective, but thats how it is.

Take it from a diehard NY fan living in Florida, if you're a fan of your local team and are live in Chicago, Boston, or Philly, and other places, consider yourself lucky that your city gives a rats a$$ about sports. Florida as a state is a giant embarrassment.

So the Philly rep is deserved and other cities get a pass because of their insignificance? New York aside, in my example.

Anyway, The point I had started to make in that post before getting side tracked was that Philly fans will dish it out to visiting players and fans, but we dish it out even harder to our teams. Everyone knows it, but no-one acknowledges it. It's not malice, it's passion, perhaps to the point of fault.

Ehhhhh.. theres a reason Lincoln Financial and the Vet had jail cells.

There have been more incidents with fans in Philly than any other fanbase.

Booing your own team isnt new. NY fans do it too, probably more than Philly.

We dont boo our own teams championship celebrations however. We dont cheer career-ending injuries. We dont have courtrooms or jails in our stadiums. We dont cost our teams games by throwing crap on the field. We dont shoot flare guns in MNF games. We dont brawl against eachother. We dont stab eachother at other venues. We dont fight the players. We dont purposely vomit on kids at a ballgame. We dont set mascots on fire. We dont pelt players with batteries. We dont pick fights at Geno's sending war vets to the hospital.

I can go on and on and on.

There is no fanbase with this kind of resume, unfortunately.

Dodgers and Raiders fans are huge douchebags too.

I was raised a Yankee fan (not one anymore). Im from NY too. Yankee fans are some of the biggest bandwagoners in sports.

That is undeniable. Red Sox fans and Cubs fans are more knowledgeable I find.

The atmosphere at the stadium is extremely tame and corporate compared to other ballparks. Its like a Toronto Maple Leafs game at the ACC.

Numbers dont matter because not all venues have equal capacity.

Its about %.

I guess the Red Sox only draw because of Fenway then, too, right?

Why do the Philadelphia Flyers draw? Why do the Buffalo Sabres draw?

Theyre not successful teams.

The Cubs havent committed to a rebuild until this past year. They won their Division in 2008, 2007, were a .500 team in 2006, missed the wild card by 3 games in 2004, and who could forget 5 outs from the WS in 2003?

The product on the field hasnt been as bad as youre implying for the last 10 years.

That is quite substantial IMO. That suggests to me theres more to it than just Wrigley Field.

Now, if that map suggested the Marlins and Royals had a more diehard index than the Red Sox or Cubs, then I wouldnt consider it, but it doesnt.

100+ losses this year for the first time in almost 50 years.
