There is nothing like St Patrick's Day in Chicago. They actually dye the river green! It's already a little green, but this is a bright, electric kelly green. They use a non-toxic vegetable dye that dissipates in a couple of days and doesn't hurt the fish or anything. It is a really fun party. Of course the drunks are there, but there is a lot of fun to be had without getting wasted. And yes, it is fun for kids too.
The "beach" is pretty much worthless in SF as its almost always too windy, too foggy, too cold, and too dangerous to swim pretty much any time of year. That's on top of the sand being pretty disgusting in itself. Pretty to look at but not very useful imo.
For most of my life, Ocean Beach was the only beach I had ever been to. Then I went to Ft. Lauderdale on a vacation. Unbelievable! The ocean was NICE! Warm, clear water that didn't stink and had practically no waves at all; it was like the world's largest bathtub. I couldn't believe going to the beach could be so pleasant.
I didn't realize till then just how nasty Ocean Beach really is.
And at any rate, dementor is back with a fresh new screen name. It'll be obvious soon enough which new face is him.
Actually, that was my gig, along with chiding dementor for his frequent visits to the Central Park Children's Zoo, his deep and undying love for the Jonas brothers and his affection for the designer socks he'd purchase at strip malls.
That said, others (chitown2pa being one) improved on the material and made it more humorous. There's enough to go around and I may save some for LANightmare.
1.Wheres the big waves
2.Wheres the great salmon/crustaceans that can be caught
3.Wheres the fresh sea breeze
4.Wheres the seals that make for a cool show on the wharf
5. Where can you go whale watching or see dolphins
SF wins..
The water that never gets over 50. Where you can't see your feet when you're only in up to your ankles. Where you don't dare go in above your ankles or the undertow will suck your ass to China. And of course that lovely breeze blowing straight down from Alaska. And right at 4:00 the fog comes in and waterboards you. Of course you can always go to the Cliff House and pay $10 for a watery tuna sandwich.
The lake is warm in the summer, it's fun and safe to swim in, you can even drink the water safely. And the city grooms the sand and cleans out the trash daily. It is the cleanest beach you'll see anywhere.

Nice line-- "And right at 4:00 the fog comes in and waterboards you."
Dude, the lake is after all a lake: no wawes, no beach vibe.
Not exactly. To give you some perspective, if Lake Michigan had saltwater instead of freshwater, it would be referred to as a sea rather than a lake. The Great Lakes possess 20% of the Earth's entire supply of freshwater. Lake Michigan is 2nd to Lake Superior in surface area, but 1st in water volume, as it is the deepest of the Great Lakes.
In a few decades or so when the Colorado River dries up, cities like LA and Phoenix will be begging for our water.
Quite frankly, you can't go wrong with both cities. Chicago and S.F are always ranked among the best cities in America. In terms of urban planning & development, S.F mayor Gavin Newsom has considered Chicago a model for what S.F should be.
"...Newsom isn't the only San Franciscan looking to Chicago. Last fall, Planning Director Dean Macris and his senior planners visited Chicago - at their personal expense - to walk the city and talk with developers, architects and city officials: "One of my motives was to get our senior people to think about what quality architecture can do for us in San Francisco," Macris said.
And in April, members of the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association, a public policy think tank, went to Chicago in search of ideas. SPUR President Jim Chappell came back a convert. "We really got a lot of inspiration -- you saw that a city can will itself to be the best city in the country," Chappell said. "They have a clear vision of what they want to be, and somebody strong to make it happen.""
that guy saying SF and the Bay doesn't have microclimates is hilarious..
chic'ans have a inferiority complex against sf (and the bay area)because it is a much smaller city, yet gets more recognition in the media on an everyday basis. SF is the 2nd most dense city in the US. Chic'ans and midwesterners try to get all big and bad when talking about SF summer weather and how their hot humid cornfield by the lake is "glorious" on select days...gimme a break
you guys can keep your greasy pizza, broad shoulders, and hokey midwestern accents...i think the Bay is doing just fine
Boo...hiss....pompous post! Cmon LA, you guys are supposed to be laid back and accepting of others...What happened?

thats been established but they continue to bring up turning salt water into fresh water which is an expensive process.
