well, the seattle area has great biking roads, with lots of beautiful scenery, so you wouldnt have to live in the downtown core. Also WA state is super diverse, so you could be in the desert within 2 hours, and be in the mountains in 30 mins
I moved to Denver area 8 yrs ago from the San Francisco Bay Area (California). I enjoy Denver and my standard of living has increased three fold. It's Much cheaper here in Denver than in the bay.
However, don't discount what people say about Denver - it can be disappointing. Lack of trees, flat topography, dry, minimum culture, few unique restaurants, long winters, and no real spring. Yes this is all relative but trust me when I say the cold weather lasts months. It is sunny a lot, and when you get used to it, 55 and sunny is a nice day.
The mountains are to the west and Denver is considered high plains. The foothills are rock and scrub oak. Spruce and aspen trees are abundant 30-60 min west of Denver. I prefer the pines and boulders in the Sierra's to the pencil looking spruce and towering mountains but The Rockies have there own flare (I feel like I'm in a train set when driving I70 because the mountains tower over everything - you feel small). With that said, please don't forget Denver is NOT in the mountains! Denver is on the plains and the grass and flats continue East as far as the eye can see. I was very disappointed to learn this.
The people are very friendly in comparison and granola/down to earth are great buzz words to describe most Denverites. I miss Cali but will never move back as its to crowded, overpriced, and the people/school systems generally suck. However, I'm considering a move to TX as the cost of living is even cheaper and I'm tired of the cold. Heck it's snowing now and its pretty much April! I have six inches to shovel. No joke. I miss spring!!!
Oh yeah - lotion up, get a humidifier, and put most of your tank tops away. You won't need as many of them. Buy a snow shovel and be prepared for mad traffic into the mountains.
Its a great place to raise a family. Good luck!
