Ok. But that does not change the fact that the metro area demographics are more or less irrelevant. You don't live in metro, you live in a neighborhood in a town/city in a county that is in the metro. That was what I was trying to say.

Well if we only looked at city propers then it would imply Austin is more diverse than Washington DC US2010, which it's not. People decide to live in suburbs and commute into the city, looking at something as useless as city propers is pretty irrelevant- especially in an increasingly woven metropolitan as these two. Especially when you factor how the city of Houston by itself (without it's suburbs) has a larger Asian population than the entire Austin Metropolitan. You're comparing apples to oranges.
Austin's a lovely place to live for those that like topography, outdoors recreation, live music, music in general, artistic vibe, nightlife, Tex-Mex, Barbecue, college sports, & eclectic city environment. It's not really a great place for diversity at this point, compared to cities like Houston, Dallas, Washington, Miami, Boston, Philadelphia, & even Detroit it has a ways to go.
Oh, is the Austin area kind of boring? I'm confused, because others have told me that it has nice topography for hiking and things like live music, etc.
Austin has those things and, it's the reason most people state for moving there. The problem is most people don't ever end up doing these things on a regular basis, and they most likely end up in the north Austin suburbs because Austin proper is so expensive (even more boring).
Austin is an idea. For most of Austin's non-student population this idea never becomes a reality. It's the same problem for a lot of cities around America that are so romanticized and over-hyped. The things that make them great are only enjoyed by a small percentage of the population. IMO Austin is a place to visit, but day to day Houston makes a better place to live.
On top of that Austin is very weak in gay nightlife. Houston has a larger gay population and a bigger variety of potential friends/dates. For things most people do often Houston wins. Eating (Houston has better restaurants and grocery stores), working ( Houston has more jobs), living ( is cheaper in most areas), and I can't emphasize enough how much better the gay scene is in Houston.
I know outdoor activities are important, but for the things you do most I think Houston is a better choice.

Houston is huge; it's the fourth largest city in the country.
I'll be keeping an eye out for another thread by the OP, Philadelphia v. Chicago.
To the OP, as a bisexual living in Austin who has stayed all over Houston for long periods of time (probably adding up to almost 2 years in all), I can without a doubt recommend Austin.
