Where do you see more beach activity? Like people playing beach soccer, volleyball, championships, etc... beach concerts count too. Also where do you see more people?
IMPORTANT:
This is only regarding about activities happening on the shore (the sand), not the city where the bars, avenues, hotels are located.

It depends upon which beach in Rio you're talking about. Copacabana is a beehive of activity with people playing soccer in the sand, beach vollyball, and other sporting activities, much more so than anything you see in Miami. However, you don't see as much activity on Ipanema beach.
Rio - each beach section is informally dedicated to different groups. There is the sporty part, the intellectual part (people reading books), the gay part ( men), the lesbian part (women only) ect. It's amazing
lol, is this really a comparison? Rio on all fronts. On top of that, it has arguably the most incredible physical setting of any major city on the planet.
I've never been to Rio, but given Rio's size, and the overall more social/party atmosphere of Latin America, I'd guess Rio beats Miami. Therefore I voted Rio. I mean, Miami destroy other beach cities in the US in this regard, but not against cities in Latin-America(the very cities that Miami tries to imitate).
Just to put the sizes in perspective, the city of Miami Beach has about 88,000 people in 7 square miles. Conversely, the neighborhood of Copacabana has about 147,000 in 1.5 square miles.
