I barely ever see "Michael Jordan" events here. Actually I believe he lives in DC or Charlotte most of the time. His house has been on the market in the suburbs for years. He doesn't even live here anymore.
And wait. Are you talking about actual factories or just retail stores?
I didn't mean Michael Jordan specifically. I just meant celebrity events in general. Even small towns have celebrity parties and events.
I'm more or less talking about professionals who may work for Prada, Calvin Klein, or Louis Vuitton who host events. Not fashion shows, but random events and parties thrown largely by and for industry professionals and fashion writers.
Under nightlife options for NYC, where is 'fashion industry'? Is it under lounges or above dining?
It works like this.
You do this thing we call "socializing." During that process, you may meet someone who works for Avon. You exchange info, Facebook each other, etc.
Then they may add you to a mailing list and send out a note saying, "Hey, so and so is releasing their Spring collection and they're having an event. Please come through and bring friends!"
Here are some statements and my opinion of said statements in all caps
1) NYC's Nightlife is better than that of Chicago's overall. AGREED
2) NYC has a greater/better fashion industry than that of Chicago's. AGREED
3) NYC has more promo events with celebrities, models, etc than Chicago. AGREED
4) Chicago has almost no promo events with models, celebs, or fashion industry. DISAGREED
5) Chicago's drinking culture is all about bars. DISAGREED
6) Chicago has absolutely no presence with high fashion houses. DISAGREED
With the below information I am NOT saying that Chicago has some amazing party to fashion designer event presence. I am merely presenting information on what is out there and that there are very high fashion houses here indeed (no, they don't all just sit there and never host events):
Many more and many more coming in the next year (YSL coming back, Tom Ford opening up, etc). Again, no I'm not saying Chicago > NY in that. I'm merely presenting what exists here in the fashion industry (much, much more outside of these).
Now, I believe the topic is Philadelphia and Chicago, not NYC and Chicago.

That's not quite what I had in mind. A lot of cities have high end stores including Atlanta, Boston, LA, SF, DC, etc. Just like a lot of cities have retail banks. But that's not the same as having executives, buyers, designers, models, runway assistants, and the entire gamut of positions that collectively make up the industry. Just like having Bank of America retail branches is not the same as having a prop trading desk, fixed income desk, options desk, etc.

I know exactly what you meant. Besides presenting what is out there, they do not just sit dormant there. They do host events, parties, etc as do the clubs here all the time. In fact, one of the clubs near me has a "Ford Models" (yes, Ford Models has I believe 4 offices in the US - NYC, LA, Chicago, and Miami) party about once a month. It's not as cold fashion wise as you think here. However, no, it's nowhere near NYC or even LA and nobody's arguing that in the least bit. I'm presenting information that it's not as cold as you think it is fashion wise.
By the way, a DJ friend of mine here in Chicago has been flown to Paris and NYC numerous times for Louis Vuitton to do their shows (and also does some of the events here). I have another friend here, a fashion designer, who actually won the Oscar's contest not too long ago. I have another friend who was in Vogue listed as one of the top hair sylists in the US. I have 3 friends here who were all Ford Models (they are older now) internationally. Not as cold as you think, but yes nowhere close to NYC or LA in this regard, but most of these places do actually have a presence in town which has been getting bigger every year.
If you want to go to happy hour and stare at mediocre-looking women who want to talk about work all evening, you can go to DC for that. Or if you want to stand around at a bar having a vanilla ass conversation with some chick wearing a T-shirt, then there are plenty of cities where you can find that. Or if you just want to have a nice evening on the town with your lady over some drinks, there are plenty of cities where you can do that.
But nobody comes to NYC for that. F*** that noize. At least not Manhattan. If you want quiet conversation, then go to the library. A lot of people move here because they want to live life in the fast lane. And that usually involves partying every night around women and people that you're not going to find in Chicago or DC or Houston. And as an intern or summer associate, it's one of the best places in the world to be when you have the freedom and time to party yourself out to your heart's content.
I think a nice brooklyn bar on a nice spring or summer night with some buddies is good enough for me.
