Since San Francisco and Seattle both won my other two vacation threads, I figured that I'd do one comparing these two cities. Both have many attractions for visitors and are great US cities imo. I've been to the Seattle area before, but have yet to go to San Francisco.
Seattle: Pike Place Market, Space Needle, Vibrant downtown with great shopping, Ferry rides, Monorail system, Many nice museums, Lake Union etc.
San Francisco: Fishermans Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, Vibrant downtown, Golden Gate Park, Trolley rides, Alcatraz, Coit Tower, etc.
Location: northern Vermont - previously NM, WA, & MA

I love Seattle and it's a fantastic city to vacation in with plenty to do, but it's out of San Francisco's league. San Francisco is a lot more world class with a lot more to do.

Yeah, I agree. If you've never been to either city, San Francisco will be a more impressive experience. Just walking from North Beach to Chinatown to Nob Hill is a pretty cool experience for a visitor. Between Golden Gate Park and the world class museums like the DeYoung, Asian Art Museum, and MOMA, there's a lot of stuff to do and you've got Oakland and Berkely a short BART ride away, plus everything across the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin like the Headlands, Point Reyes, and then the Sonoma and Napa Wine Country--and to the south you have the wild coastline all the way to Santa Cruz, plus the Santa Cruz Mountains and redwoods. But one could spend days just in SF without a car and be entertained.
Seattle is a great city, and there some cool stuff like the SAM, Experience Music Project, Boeing Museum, and interesting neighborhoods around downtown--but it's just not as unique an experience as SF. It's a great base to see Mt Rainier and the Cascades or even a day trip to the San Juan Islands, but it's a little but further in driving to see some of the real highlights of the region. For me, Seattle has always been a fun weekend trip from Portland on the train to catch a ballgame.
49ers are going to the Super Bowl this year, says this Bears fan.
But yeah, I vote San Fran for reputation. Seattle is a little under hyped, if you ask me.
