Honestly I'd flip a coin, I think they both have their weaknesses and advantages and if you are in one, you can still visit and explore the other one. That might not make sense if you are from CA but from somebody not from there, I think they would probably do that.

Seems nicer and the beaches are excellent. Plus you have excellent transportation and 3 cities (san jose, san francisco, oakland). At least i consider them different cities economically
no.. and esp not compared to LA...unless you mean you just want to walk out there in your hoodie, put your feet in the freezing water for 5 seconds then continue to walk your dog.
