California has a strong Southern influence fron Dust Bowl migrants from OK,AL, AR, and from the Blacks who mostly came from TX and LA. The accent in Bakersfield and Central Valleu sounds southern(pin/pen merger. And country music is popular in Inland So Cal.

Eastern NM was settled by Texans, and still has a Texan influenced Accent.

Before the massive influx of midwesterners. Arizona was quite a Southern influenced state with the settlers coming from Texas.

Which state in the West do you think.is the most Southern influenced.

It's an interesting question, however, only Cali, Arizona, New Mexico and possibly southern Nevada seem to have any real southern influence historically and you have described their historical roots quite well.

If southeastern New Mexico and the Central Valley of California were "states" then I might pick between those two. However, I am going to pick Arizona simply because politically it aligns itself in an almost identical fashion with southern states. Although this is predominately due to Yankee conservative voters moving there it has always had that type of mentality politically.

Not exactly identical, they're not the same kind of republicans. Most republicans in AZ have roots in the Midwest and California and vote more liberally on social issues compared to most Southern states.

Many Southerners don't realize they pronounce it the same.

Southern California and Arizona definitely have a mid-southern tinge. Lots of immigrants, black and white, from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and Louisiana settled out there. The country music scene in Bakersfield/Los Angeles once rivaled Nashville song-for-song. Some of those dust bowlers also settled in Colorado and New Mexico.

Yeah, but people in Phoenix don't sound any different than people in Southern California. I don't think it's a Southern thing.

People listen to country music everywhere. All of Texas is not southern.

I don't get these types of questions.

Just blown away by the way people perceive Arizona. Just so many falsehoods believed about the state. First of all Arizona was not settled by Texans. It's was settled by midwesterners and easterners looking to escape harsh winters or on their way to California. The massive influx of midwesterners is not a recent phenomena. Some people think the migration patterns to Phoenix are similar to those of Dallas, Houston, or Atlanta. Nothing could be further from the truth. Phoenix has always had similar immigration patterns as other western states. There isn't a trace of anything southern really to speak of in Arizona. Arizona accents have nothing southern in them nor is there any trace of southernness when it comes to cuisine or anything else. I can't recall ever seeing confederate flags flying anywhere in Arizona. Arizona is more or less an extension of the west coast with the northern half of the state very much a part of the mountain west with obvious influences from the midwest and east. You could argue that the one part of the country that has the least to do with Arizona is the south.

Hmm I would say its between NM and AZ. Both states have a strong southern influence in architecture, history, food, and culture.
