If Birmingham and surrounding burbs merged with Jefferson County it would go from #98 to #20 in city population. Population would be 658,466 with 1123 sq miles.
Definitely, there would also be a ton of undeveloped land for future development within city limits. Also would have places that would be 25+ miles from the city center.
On the other hand, it wouldn't necessarily be a traditional annexation and it would change the dynamics of representation at the city-county level. So, it isn't like the former city of Detroit would necessarily dominate.
A city like Buffalo would go up to about 11th in population if it consolidated with Erie County.
I think you are understating the relationship between Detroit and the downriver suburbs. They want nothing to do with Detroit the city. If Detroit somehow merged with Wayne County, people downriver would move to Monroe. Those towns hate eachother, and they hate Detroit.
Of course, that is why I said "Birmingham and the burbs". But after subtracting the suburbs that have parts of their city in other counties, and those who would be unlikely to merge. The population would be around 586K, which would move Birmingham from #98th largest to #32nd largest.
I wasn't picking on you, btw...it just seemed this thread went quickly to a population chest thumping match and no one bothered to consider that most of these places would be adding a fraction of the county population in a merger.
If Minneapolis were to consolidate with Hennepin County, it's population would jump from 388,000 to 1.2 million. If St. Paul were to consolidate with Ramsey County, it's population would increase from 288,00 to over 520,000 and the resulting land area would still be much smaller than most "major" U.S. cities at 155.78 sq mi
I would like a Ramsey County/St. Paul merger, but I can not describe how weird it would be for that city to be bigger than Minneapolis.
A Hennepin/Minneapolis will likely never happen, there are so many individual cities. Fun fact: At last count, I believe there are 300 independent municipalities in the CSA.
Detroit would become the 5th largest city in the country again.
