Having lived in both, I would say that more intermingling between ethnicities and races outside of the workplace is in California. As for better race relations, they are both horrible.

So by your standard, which place has "good" race relations?
Uhh the picture you showed of New York looks really divided actually. I'm sure New York has lots of areas (I've personally seen them) where its integrated but that picture does no justice.
The Bay Area if I remember correctly is actually the most integrated place in the country. Here's the map http://www.flickr.com/photos/walkingsf/5511585016/sizes/o/in/photostream/ (broken link)
I actually think that different races (particularly blacks and whites) intermingle the most in the South. Yeah, that's right, the region with the worst reputation has by far the most interaction between the races.
Your average person in Atlanta, Houston or New Orleans interacts with more people of other races/ethnicities than your average person in Boston, Philly or San Francisco. Same goes for the smaller areas and rural areas.
Which one has better race relations, less black and white people leaving, more intermingling between ethnicities and races.
As future president, I believe that the Northeast takes the cake here.
There is no place in California that is as integrated as this. Maybe LA comes close.
How is this map integrated? It doesn't look that integrated to me.
Just do a search on this forum or on google: Top 10 most segregated metropolitan areas.
Interracial relationships are more common in LA than in east coast and midwest older cities. There is in my opinion, more "fusion" of cultures in LA than . . . well I really can't say for sure about the northeast, but I live in the Chicago area, and am planning to move to LA.
People in the Chicago area are very respectful of diversity, and they value diversity, but there still seems to be a very distinct parallel non-intersecting cultural trajectories between black, white, and hispanic. IE: Look at all the blackhawks fans in the Chicago area. Professional hockey seems to be an almost exclusively "white" sport. Just an example.
