It is because of land that was left to freed slaves in the south. In the north, blacks didn't have much. Still don't, but that's a topic for a different day.

It depends on the state in the North, as you may find certain small towns with a decent to high Black percentage. Michigan has towns like Baldwin, Cassopolis, Covert, Vandalia and some rural townships in SE MI, among some others, have decent to high percentages of Black residents. In NY, some of the small towns in the Hudson Valley/Catskill area, as well as some in Wayne and Orleans Counties have notable to high Black percentages. Illinois has some small/rural towns like this as well. It isn't like Down South, but rural/small town Black communities/populations are present in some Northern states.

San Juan, Puerto Rico never seems to get mentioned in these threads, but the city and the surrounding area does have a substantial black population.

There has been Black middle class and professional people in Northern areas for well over a century, if not for centuries. So, that isn't necessarily true.

Also, some Black war veterans were given land after the Revolutionary War. In fact, one of the first settlers of the Fulton NY area, just north of Syracuse was a Black Revolutionary War veteran(Henry Bakeman).

Why would anyone mention Atl in a thread about places NOT recognized for having a large blk population?

If anything Atl is the opposite of what the op is asking for.

I'm referring to the Blacks that participated in The Great Migration that became part of the Middle Class that don't have any true wealth, no land, and fewer assets. The Black Middle Class don't have any wealth anymore than the White Middle Class. The debt is the same. Blacks with property, real property, not just a half acre or a small apartment complex somewhere, have assets they can leverage, and while they may live in the country they're not as bad off as people would assume that they appear to be.

You make a good point but my response was about RE, not cash flow. There are professional, White Collar Blacks everywhere, as well as business owners. Those you are referring to would be more inclined to live in the city anyway.

Sure, but some had land and not all Black people in the North lived in cities. Check this out about the first known Black person to be the head of a municipality in the US: First Black Mayor of America

There is a street in a rural hamlet near east of Syracuse by the name of Peterboro, where Black folks have been living in for well over a century and a half.

My point is just that there have always been Black folks that have had something throughout this country.

Very informative post. I didn't know slavery in New York was official. I had heard about slaves being captured and taken back to the South from there.
