While neither is a truly major city, they are both regional powerhouses that tend to be overlooked.

Which of these metros has better educational opportunities, culture, cuisine, history, climate, and retail? Which gets the nod overall?

honey, Omaha is quite a different place than ANYTHING in Alabama

Birmingham's county went broke, one of the largest BKs in history. Birmingham has a bad
past as well. Not a good comparison one bit.

Omaha is pretty nice with a very decent downtown and scenic waterfront parks along the river and quite walkable. The Old Market has a lot of charm and the food selection was very good. I spent the night there on a cross country drive not expecting much and was pleasently surprised with a lot more to offer than I would have imagined.

Omaha has better schools, a better economy, lower crime, friendlier people and better weather IMO. It can be considered a little isolated so that would be a negative point. Very nice city, though.

I'm not even sure if Omaha is that isolated. It's about two hours from Des Moines, three hours from KC, five hours from the Twin Cities, six hours from St. Louis, seven hours from Denver, and eight hours from Chicago. Plenty of medium and large cities within driving distance. You could even make day trips out of KC and MSP.

Oh absolutely, I meant more so because Nebraska is a very rural state and it is surrounded by other rural states so some people get the impression that you are in the middle of nowhere. Alabama isn't much better but, people not from the Midwest may not realize that you do sometimes have to drive a good bit to get places.

I've not been to Omaha, but from what I know and have read, it's in better shape than Birmingham. But I will say that it looks like Birmingham has finally turned a corner, which is good to see.
