I don't really like hot weather, nor cold weather. They both kind of suck to me. I like something in the middle. I think the most pleasant weather for being out all day walking a city or going for a jog or bike ride is between 50-80 degrees. Now, what you like might be different. I don't care. I did this for my personal interest to see what cities I'd like to visit and at what times of the year.
So, I did a tally of cities with most days per year based on a few years of data (same years) and the # of days per year they had days between 50-80 degrees.
Here are my findings if you also like "mild weather" .. Also take into account if you don't like much precip or gray days or whatever, I didn't take that into account.
In no particular order.
NYC 218
Chicago 144
San Francisco 353
Boston 172
DC 171
Los Angeles 272
Philadelphia 195
Atlanta 201
Houston 120
Seattle 256
Out of the cities I did, Houston and Chicago both seem to be bottom of the barrel if you like these temps, you won't see many of them on a yearly basis. While SF, LA and Seattle seem to be the best. Surprisingly, NYC has a good # of these days, probably from being right on the ocean. Atlanta not too bad either.
Some interesting observations.
Boston has later springs than even Chicago
DC has mild winters but way earlier and hotter summer conditions than boston/nyc/philly SF is pretty perfectly mild almost year round
la never gets cold but definitely lots of hot days in there, august - september and a bit into october are the worst Chicago has both extended winter and summer periods with relative short springs/falls.
Am surprised NYC and Philly are even that much different - they generally have the nearly identical weather +/- one degree and generally the same in terms of sun/rain by the day
75 during the day and 55 at night is perfect for me
But then that doesnt make for great beach days etc. I like a little diversity but can do without hot or cold extremes. Philly to me isnt bad; the summer to me is more extreme than typically the winter. Though some nasty cold days can and do happen
This looks about right, no major shockers. Though I'm a little surprised New York has that many more mild days than Chicago. Having lived in both cities, the difference in weather while definitely noticeable didn't quite seem that substantial. I'm also a little surprised with the difference between New York and Boston. I thought they'd be much closer, as I figured the higher number of oppressively hot days in New York would more or less cancel out the higher number of extremely cold days in Boston.
Seattle and San Francisco definitely have my favorite climates.
Los Angeles, I'm sure there is a steep drop off with days above 70 for SF and then factor in the wind with all those days in the 50's and low/mid 60's and it's not quite as "mild" as it might look here.
And look at SF! I am always amazed when people say SF is "cold". It's warm year-round.
People say it's cold because even in the summer temps often don't get above the 50s or 60s even if they don't get below it either. Throw in some rain and wind and it's not all that comfortable. It's not "warm" like say San Diego.
Los Angeles is by far my favorite. It really has 4 seasons just not so extreme. Winter is my favorite season. Highs in the 60's, lows in the 40's with occassional 70s and some rainy days too.
