It wasn't just you - there have been several posters in this thread who keep citing median income and %poverty as an absolute measure of wealth across different cities. This doesn't take into account that COL varies dramatically and that the threshold for % poverty is the same across the country. In a lot of ways median income and percent poverty don't tell you much across different metro areas. I'm not exaggerating when I say I know people who live near San Francisco or San Jose who earn 6 figures and are basically living in squalor.
I definitely believe it given the median income for SEATTLE is now 102k..I gotta go check out what SFs median is. Add some childcare costs, student loan debt, healthcare costs and I could see it looking grim.

100k in the Bay Area is nothing...for families. But a single person can get along just fine imo.

2019 median income in San Fran was 123,900 +/4,700
Essentially the 2014-2018 numbers give you a very solid sense of what the city was like in ~2016.
The 2019 1-year estimates give you a slightly less accurate sense of what the city was like in 2019. Obviously income has gone up significantly regardless of MOE.
Median Household income in SF is $123k. 161k for whites. 105k for asians. 78k for Hisapnics
Margin of Error for blacks is too large for me to take serious. But its 49k fwiw.
Sidenote: the variaition in COL in this country is just sick at this point. Nevermind income inequality. Not a good sign.
Using that same source for Seattle:
Median Household income is $102k.
111k for whites.
112k for asians.
78k for Hispanics
43K for Blacks
Again, though, we need context for cost of living - here are some interesting stats for Seattle:
Between 2009 and 2019:
- average home price in Seattle increased by nearly 90% (430K to 760K)
- rent increased by 45%
- median income increased by 70%
This at least partly explains why the homeless crisis has gotten so much worse during that time and why so many people have been displaced from Seattle to cheaper suburbs.
The link in Vincent's post is clear that $85,562 is 2014-2018 for Seattle.
Yeah, BBMM's source was more current - I used it for my latest post.
