Well, if "New York City" were to ever host an Olympics I guarantee you most of the events and even lodging would wind up being in NJ. Kind of like the Super Bowl.
I imagine for Detroit, it'd be great for the duration of the events and with the new construction generated to build the facilities, especially since there's so much room to pretty much build anything. But afterwards, the facilities would probably sit vacant and it'd just become another burden on the city unless enough businesses and residents move in (before, during, or after) to actually make the improvements useful.

The Olympics in NYC or San Francisco would be amazing! I can't think of a greater way to showcase our country. The Olympics in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Detroit, Houston, and Boston would be boring. The Olympics in Chicago, Miami, or Seattle would be ok but nothing exciting.
