I hate LA, but unless you are Cuban/South American, LA's nightlife is vastly superior to Miami for most Americans. Miami's nightlife would be great if you are a rich guy from Brazil.

The city of Miami is more condensed so it is easier to get around. Neighborhoods like Wynwood, Brickell, Downtown and Miami Beach get a lot of action. If you want something more quaint and romantic Coconut Grove is nice for dinner. Miami is a much more of a latin city and this is a good thing, it pulses with carnal energy. The people are tan in a 'natural' way and you see a lot of smiles and curves on the women 'latin' People go out in Miami to really party and live...
LA is a lot more spread out and can be difficult to get around. I find the people more uptight, careerist and not as latin. People usually like to be home at midnight. Santa Monica, Hollywood, Silver Lake/Echo Park and Long Beach are all very spread out and attract different crowds. Metro LA has beautiful beach dining but it is more hushed and conservative.
I think for nightlife Miami is more exciting.

Is LA's nightlife really vastly superior?

Ever been to Miami?

Anyway I live in Miami and travel to LA twice a year and I go out in LA. The two cities don't really compare too much. Miami is more condense making it easier to go to different spots and the clubs are far superior than the ones in LA. I can't take a city which has a last call at 2am seriously anyway. In Miami you get dinner at 10:30pm to go out at 1am. Getting to a club or bar at 11:30pm is too early.

LA will have a better live music scene but besides for that, Miami hands down.

As a not rick guy from Philadelphia, I have to say I like Miami's nightlife (and I don't even like clubs).

Last call at 2:00AM? I've been kicked out the door before 2:00AM in California. My experiences in CA have mostly been last call at 1:30, out the door at 1:45 so the the staff goes home at 2:00AM. Clubs in SouthBeach close early at 5AM while Miami proper can go to 7AM.

You're right about dinner hours being 10 or later in Miami. I mean, if you eat too early, how in the hell do you have time to go to the gym after work?

Miami has the club scene but that scene never appealed to me, even as a youngster. And being open till 5am once again is not appealing to me. Live music, jazz, an endless amount of great restaurants, a nice pub and an occassional party, oh and salsa dancing sometimes. I actually love the LA nightlife scene. The last time I was in Miami I was surprised there was so much of that god awful house/electronic music. Had fun at a couple of cool latin clubs though which reminded me of being in Rio.

It may or may not be, but it is vastly more varied. And that's what makes it better.

And for this early last call silliness, why would I want to drink and party until 4am or 5am every time? I'm not 21 anymore. That left my system a long time ago. All that late night/all night super clubbing has lost its appeal. Just a personal preference.

And if people in LA want to do that, they can. You just have to know where to go or roll with a local in the know. Not every place shuts down at 2am, as some may think. There are several places one can go in LA to party/club/drink until 4am or so. Or we can just go to Vegas

A later last call does not automatically equate to "better nightlife."
