In my opinion, it's easier to find nice vantage points of Downtown Oakland's skyline than Downtown Sacramento. I think part of the issue with Sac is that it's too flat to get a great view and also there are so many trees(which isn't a bad thing at all btw), that it's even hard to get a decent look from the freeways. Like on 50 right there in downtown, you can barely make out the high rises because there are too many trees.

Otherwise, I do like Sacramento's skyline better than Fresno and Bakersfield which don't really have real skylines.
There are some neat "distant views" of the Sacramento skyline in the Central Valley (owing to its flatness).

I personally feel SAC has more attractive buildings. Even our humble draw bridge, The Tower Bridge, has more charm than the new Bay Bridge. The gold-speckled color of Sacramento's Tower Bridge is so much more attractive than Bay Bridge White. (Although I do Love the new bay bridge, biked and walked it several times already)
I wonder how awesome the view would have been if the capitol had been built on a hill overlooking the bay in Vallejo as originally planned... oh well, water under the bridge.

Honesltly, a lot depends on high-speed rail.

So it looks like Fresno and Bakersfield won't be transforming any time soon.

True, high speed rail would literally put those places on the map so to speak. Imagine people being able to commuter from Fresno to San Jose or Bakersfield to LA. With the housimg price differential those places would explode. (I'd just hope they'd explode in an urban and not suburban fashion, which is likely given it is rail).

The latest wrench in the gears is deciding the route through these cities. Originally, the idea was to hit the city centers and spur dense growth around a few hubs. Now, as funding falls apart and politicians change their tunes, it is being suggested that there will be fringe suburban stations.

That is unfortunate... Given the nature of high speed rail hopefully even these suburban stations will promote urbanish development.

Poor Fresno...they get no respect whatsoever. People even forget where it's located considering you can get basically anywhere in California without going through Fresno even though it's practically in the middle of the state(being bypassed by the Interstates doesn't help either). The only people who ever talk about Fresno are people who grew up there or live there now, and even most of them are pretty modest or self-deprecating when it comes to the city(I've got family from there and still living there).

It's one of the largest forgotten cities of the US when you consider the size of it. More than any city in California they could use a new approach, look for some way to re-juventate that town... If anything the location is nice if you like the Sierra, but even there it's far from the big ski areas...

Even this post will be ignored, because it's about Fresno...

High Speed could spell hell for Fresno and Bakersfield making them ex-urban hell. First and foremost, The San Joaquin Valley needs good paying jobs, and finding a way to improve the air and water quality.

Or, picture Capitol Park along with the Capitol Building in Sacramento on a 50-100 foot incline. Never gonna happen, but like I said before , if there were immediate vantage points where you could actually see the downtown, midtown, and the immediate older neighborhoods surrounding the downtown; Sacramento would be seen and appreciated, as it is now, in a whole other light.
