I would actually generalize that and say there are quite a few similarities between the South of France and the Southern California coast in general.
Exactly. That's all I meant. Grapico clearly doesn't travel much. The coast up from LA is called the American Rivera. My first time in Santa Monica I didn't say omg this is exactly like Cannes but I did get a sense of it even if it was small. That was the only thing I has to reference it to at the time.

That area of Bucks is not urban but some real great areas and little towns - prettier than most would realize who have never been and close to both NYC and Philly

Agreed. It was a great place to grow up. Most Europe-like region of the US in my opinion. And being an hour from both NYC and Philly can't be beat.

Anyway, sorry to derail the thread.

I travel more than 99.9% of this website and lived in France for a summer abroad over 10 years ago.

What part of Cannes did Santa Monica remind you of?

Was it this?

deborahuso.com

maybe this?

Crina82

or this?

openplac.es

hmmm

Yeah and Ft. Lauderdale is called the Venice of America, who cares.

Your comment about Cannes is just as delusional and off as Wilshire meets Manhattan.

So basically nothing about the city itself... Why not just say the geography of California is similar to the Mediterranean Coast? Why *specifically* say Cannes France if not to make a connection between the two. I'll tell you why, the guy wants to boost the living crap out of LA, and make it something it's not, that is why he compares Wilshire to Manhattan and Santa Monica to Cannes.

Sheesh...bad day or something?

I don't think anyone was implying that Santa Monica has cobblestone streets or 400 year old architecture. But clearly there are similarities.

No just tired of the nonsense. Anything looks the same from a low quality aerial view. Did he transform into a parrot and flyover both areas? I just don't see how anybody who has been to Cannes would think it's like Santa Monica, or anybody who has been to Manhattan would think it's like Wilshire Dr. You just don't make points like that unless you are trying to prove something. So when people point out how absurd the comparison is, they are having a bad day :I

this one, too but the colors and water below look not as much like LA.

You are by far missing the point. You think it has to look exactly like the city in every way in order for someone to say that it reminds them of X city? We need cobblestone streets and small French cafés for Santa Monica to remind us to the letter of Cannes?

The point was that the sea cliffs, the hills, the beach all reminded me of a Mediterranean town and the closest I could reference was Cannes. It was not a complete reminder to where I thought I saw France everywhere but it looked like Americas answer to the Riviera.

And Wilshire Dr. from downtown to Koreatown does remind me of the type of large scale urbanity you would see in major cities like Chicago and NYC. Even though they don't look exactly the same I don't have any other cities to compare that level of large huge scale buildings in one long cluster.

The only one being silly here is you, grapico, who flips the hell out if the street or city referenced doesn't match right up to LA.

Bias is a strong influence on how things look. There are parts of LA that look similar to Orlando, I suppose that means they are alike.
