Haven't seen a thread like this. Perhaps this could turn into something historically intriguing about North American cities.
Which city is most in sync with the overall breakdown of North America? Demographically, culturally, logistically, economically, diplomatically, even in terms of air traffic and gateway connections between the most of the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Practically any other way that could link cultures, if you could think of it, by all means share here.
How about Los Angeles? New York? Chicago? Toronto? Mexico City? Saint Francis Bay Area? Washington DC? Montreal? Boston? Houston? Philadelphia? Atlanta? Dallas? Miami? Seattle? Monterrey? Vancouver?
I'm gonna go with Houston on this one. It's closest we have to a microcosm of the entire continent. In terms of people, it's part Southern, but has plenty of Yankee transplants. It has vibrant African-American, Asian-American, Latin@, and LGBT communities that add to its cosmopolitan feel.
In terms of amenities, Houston offers world-class shopping, an impeccable performing art scene, monster truck rallies, rodeos, and professional sports, something for all North American tastes. Houston is also a leader in medical research, education, energy, and business as well.
In terms of airports, though Miami offers more North American destinations, I feel that Houston Intercontinental offers more destinations in more regions of North America than Miami.
People are most likely going to vote for New York City, but I think NYC, LA, Mexico City, or Toronto are pretty anarchronistic as far as North American cities go.
Chicago feels like it has all the features of being the baseline North American city. It is relatively close to Canada, while having a relatively large Mexican and Central American population. It's not exactly in the center of the country, but when you think about the way the population of North America is tilt, its relatively close to all the major population centers. In addition, while the inner city of Chicago (the Loop) may be more like a Northeastern city, the further and further you get away from the center it gradually becomes more and more like a Western suburban area.
It just feels like the most balanced out of all the major North American cities
Probably Chicago, has northern influence, southern influence, started the building design that would follow in western cities, plus has a big mexican population capturing that. The NE cities are lacking on including Mexico.

I agree with this. People are going to vote for NYC because it's the "greatest", but I think this is one poll that Houston should win over NYC. In terms of international NA cities, NYC wins. But as a representative of America, I think NYC is missing a few things that Houston has. Chicago would be a good answer as well.
NYC is the city when you think of America. Then possibly LA.
