The only Deep South capital I would feel comfortable living in is Atlanta, and it isn't on the list, so for me, none of them. Actually, if I had my choice of capital cities in the South to live in, it would be Atlanta, Raleigh, and Nashville, and not necessarily in that order.

I guess you're just more of a midsized/big city person huh?

Somewhat the case. And it depends too. I think I could do Tampa or St. Petersburg.

Columbia is the only one of these I've ever lived in, but I liked it a lot and think it would be a great place to live and raise a family. Several posts have already listed out the reasons, and I'll second them...excellent zoo and museums; good restaurants and nightlife; close proximity to the beach, mountains, and 2 large cities/metros/airports (Atlanta, and Charlotte); and of course an excellent flagship state university with all the amenities (sports, arts, etc.) that brings. As I look down the list of these other state capitals, I just don't see that same mix of attributes anywhere else.

I wouldn't be surprised if Columbia followed the same footprints as Raleigh in NC, it's probably happening now!

I think Little Rock and Baton Rogue are comparable in many ways.

Nothing against Raleigh but I'd like to see it follow the Austin model.

I was thinking the same thing but people do have their preconceived misconceptions.

I guess it's just the difference between being a singular city metro and a multinodal metro. But both Columbia and Raleigh are already laid out very similarly so you'll see more similarities between the two as they continue to grow and develop.
