Almost hit "other" for Sheboygan brats (soaked in beer for a few hours, charred, mustard & sauerkraut on a hard roll), but I figure those probably aren't "hot dogs" (they're way better). For actual dogs, I'm going Chicago. A couple of my favorite spots are Weiner Circle (tasty chardogs and legendary mean-spirited service) and Hot Dougs (gourmet, gator/you name it and duck fat fries). Dougs, unfortunately, is closing soon, not due to poor business (always a long wait there) but because he just doesn't want to do it anymore.

You'd think he'd just sell it then instead of closing up shop.

That's what I said, but apparently people who know him said he's tired of the business and didn't think it would turn into what it has. It's such a personal spot, beyond being named after him, just what he makes and how he travels to acquire recipes and so on. Oh well. Another "Doug" needs to step in...

Not selling Hot Doug's is a noble move. Why tarnish the name if someone steps in that doesn't do the job right? Something else of quality can replace the shop, but not a hotdog joint by the name of Hot Dougs under a different owner. Doug stated that he was tired of the business after doing it for so long. I don't blame him. That place is PACKED on a regular basis and I can see why he is getting burnt out. Doug is doing with his shop what a lot of bands should but don't do. Keep at it until it's time to be done, and go out with a bang. Don't try to keep something going when the passion is gone. As sad as everyone will be to see it go, Hot Dougs will be a legendary place, not some once great establishment that is bought out and continued in a half ass manner by someone else. There are luckily lots of great dog places in Chicago. Doug's was just one of the best.
I'd rep you, but I've already repped too much. I agree. Chicago is littered with great hog dog spots, but I really do think Hot Doug's was more than just "one of the best," I think he was the best. Or at least my favorite.
While I love a traditional NY Dog (especially the dirty water dogs off a cart in NYC, or a Hoffman's Dog) covered in Sauer Kraut and Mustard, nothing can beat a chicago style dog.
The Happy Dog in Cleveland of course. Who can beat munching on a fruit-loop (or pretty much anything else imaginable) covered hot dog with a side of tater tots while watching Cleveland Orchestra musicians?
You missed the very best hot dog in the USA, we called them salty water dogs with the brown onion sauce.....sabret hotdogs from the street vendors in Manhattan, nobody comes close.
