Las Vegas vs. Pittsburgh: Both being in the middle of nowhere (Desert vs Forest), both having almost the same number of people living in both cities (2,661,369 for Pittsburgh vs. 2,247,056 for Las Vegas) and both being at the outskirts of both coasts of North America (Pittsburgh=East Coast, Las Vegas=West Coast).

Northeastern Megalopolis vs. Taiheiyo Belt: Both having economic links between lots of big cities (Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington for the Northeastern Megalopolis, Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka for the Taiheiyo Belt), both being the largest ports for each ocean (Atlantic Ocean for the Northeastern Megalopolis and Pacific Ocean for the Taiheiyo Belt), having a large concentration of population, etc.

Pittsburgh's location isn't as bad as people make it seem. I find Las Vegas to be far more isolated than Pittsburgh is.

Pittsburgh is relatively close to several cities (Cleveland, Philly, Youngstown, Erie, Harrisburg, or even D.C.-Baltimore), well connected to these places by interstates/turnpikes, and is surrounded by an abundance of small towns. Las Vegas is only close to L.A. and maybe Phoenix... with a whole lot of uninhabited, open desert in-between. Not a good comparison in that way.

I thought this was about rivalries? Definitely no rivalry between Pittsburgh and Las Vegas. That would really be... weird.

This is about rivalries. Las Vegas is also close to San Diego, Salt Lake City, Reno, Bakersfield and maybe a few small towns. Not too many people live beyond the outskirts of Pittsburgh. Mostly forests.

OK, so it **IS** about rivalries, then? So, what's the rivalry?

Also, just for the sake of facts, Reno is 448 miles away from Vegas, San Diego is 332 miles (factor in the suburban L.A. traffic you will have to inevitably drive through, and it might as well be 500 miles away), Salt Lake City is 420 miles. Hardly what I'd call "close". And there are very few reasons to ever go to Bakersfield, but I guess I'll give you that one.

I've driven through the Pittsburgh area plenty of times. As I said, there are a large number of small towns and farmland, where there are people. In 98% of the open desert surrounding Vegas, you won't see too many signs of civilization. Vegas feels/is much more remote than Pittsburgh.

Now, what's the rivalry all about? That's where I'm stumped.

Vegas isn't that isolated and neither is Pittsburgh. Vegas is close to LA, SD, and Phoenix. Pittsburgh is close to Philly, Cleveland, and Cincinnati.

Pittsburgh is closer to Baltimore and DC than it is to Philly , but I guess a 4-5 hour drive is close in some areas - to me a 2 hour drive is close but I guess that is all perspective

I think Cinci is actually a tad close to Pittsburgh

But Pittsburgh is not that isolated really - Cleveland and Columbus are within about two hours I believe

People forgot about Minneapolis vs St Paul. .. that got so bad the had to rename their sport teams... they named them after the state not the cities.... Google it... The rivalry wasn't just talking smack on the Internet it got physical...

^^Haha wow, I never knew that. The Minnesota Wild, Vikings, Timberwolves and Twins. You're right!! Back when the Lakers were there though it was Minneapolis wasn't it?

I'd love to see a battle between the Minnesota Orchestra and St Paul Chamber Orchestra...both very excellent and revered organizations.
