Then you can start to pare down the list a bit with which stadiums/cities were chosen to host large Gold Cup matches this summer. If you are on both lists as approved, its safe to assume you would have an extremely good chance of hosting a world cup match:
1. NYC - Met life Stadium. Capacity: 83k
2. Pasadena - Rose Bowl. Capacity: 91k
3. Philadelphia - Lincoln Financial Field. Capacity: 70k (Hosting GC Final)
4. Boston/Foxboro - Gillette Stadium. Capacity: 69k
5. Atlanta - Georgia Dome. Capacity: 71k. (Not sure how they would feel about playing in a dome though)
6. Baltimore - M&T Bank Stadium. Capacity: 71k
7. Seattle - Century Link Field. Capacity: 67k
8. Kansas City - Arrowhead Stadium. Capacity: 80k
9. Chicago - Soldier Field. Capacity: 63k
10. Glendale - University of Phoenix Stadium. Capacity: 63k
11. Houston - NRG Stadium. Capacity: 71k
12. Miami - Sun Life Stadium. Capacity: 66k (I included Miami because they are an International draw and SLS has undergone quite the impressive renovation)
The Georgia Dome will be gone by 2022 and replaced with a stadium designed to hold World Cup/International Friendly matches (as well as NFL and MLS matches).
I wouldn't even be surprised if it would be on the short list of locations for the final, though that will probably go to the Rose Bowl.

I never understood why in '94 the US selected only 9 venues. 12 seems to be the standard (although sometimes there are even more -- eg 17 in Spain in '82). For a country with more world class stadia in more cities than anywhere else in the world to limit the tournament to 9 cities seemed odd. If the goal is to minimize travel distances then venues should be grouped appropriately. For example, they could select 2 relatively proximate cities for each of the 8 groups, with each city hosting 3 group games and more in later rounds. The two cities should be within reasonable (say half a day) driving distance. Also, I feel that cities that have an MLS franchise should be rewarded for their support.
With that in mind, I think the following 8 city pairs would make a lot of sense:
Seattle -- Portland [Portland would need to upgrade existing stadium or build a new one]
LA -- SJ
Houston -- Dallas
Chicago -- Minneapolis
Columbus -- Pittsburgh (or Cleveland or Cincinnati)
Foxboro -- NY/NJ
Philadelphia -- Baltimore or DC
Miami -- Orlando
^Some of your soccer specific stadia are too small. And also the idea of group games being played in just two venues/cities wouldn't be favorable since they'd want countries (especially the home country) to be featured in three different areas.
Just a side-note, the US world cup was the last one to have just 24 teams. Since then it's been 32, which would certainly allow more venues.

I wasn't trying to suggest that the MLS stadia be used for WC games; obviously the much bigger and better NFL or college football stadia would have to be used (eg the Cowboys stadium in Dallas and the Ohio State stadium in Columbus). Also, I may be wrong on this but I believe most teams play at most in two cities in the preliminary round. Home country games vary from WC to WC -- sometimes it's all in one stadium and sometimes it's in as many as three.
