If somebody were considering living around the border, along 94, what would be the main differences between living on one side of the border vs the other.

I've heard that property taxes are higher in WI, income taxes are higher in MN, and car insurance is lower in WI. What other differences are there? What about the schools?

Also, what about cultural differences? I read that Hudson was a bit "red neck". Would this be a problem for a Japanese family?

I am moving to the Minneapolis area next week and had the same question

Based on quite a bit of feedback from this forum and elsewhere, we determined that Hudson and neighboring towns was not what we were looking for. This was in large part because of the perception that the Minnesota side, right up to Stillwater was more cosmopolitan and the Wisconsin side, including Hudson, was more "Wisconsin-ish."

I don't think you would have specific problems being Japanese on the Wisconsin side. However, if you want access to more amenities and diversity, you should probably stay on the MN side.

As you pointed out, cost wise its pretty close to a wash.

One complaint about Hudson I have heard is that you have to put in some effort to keep up with Wisconsin politics because all you get coverage on are the Minnesota elections.

You can buy beer on Sundays in Wisconsin, and you can buy beer in gas stations there.

Minnesota does not sound very progressive.

In related news, BuFu Alabama is THE most "progressive" area in the country, according to this standard.

The Minnesota side is closer to everything... Otherwise there's not much difference, it's all suburbs of the same city. Why do you want to live near the border, out of curiosity?

This thread might be better suited to the Minneapolis-St. Paul subforum.

Minnesota is very progressive. This is a very poor way to measure how progressive an area is.

Let me guess - Minnesota wants to make marijuana legal but I cannot buy a bottle of wine on Sunday.
