Vegas? What are you basing that on? That there are some clubs on the strip that big name DJ's roll through? C'mon man. All the labels are here. A ton of DJs and producers are based here. A lot of the big name european DJs have 2nd residences here. Here in downtown LA you wind up running in big name DJs all the time. There's a condo building up the street from me that Skirllix, Tittsworth, and the guys from Nadastrom all live at for cripes sake.

When Diplo relocated Mad Decent from Philly, where did he go..Vegas? Hell no, he came to LA. Because that's where the business is.

HARD throws events in every city now, including Vegas - but what city are they based in? That's right, LA.

EDC got moved to Vegas because a few of LA's city councilmmembers freaked out after a 15 year old girl died in 2011, but but who produces the event? That's right, LA-based Insomniac.

And who hosted the inaugural EDM trade show and conference EDMBiz that takes place along side EDC? That's right - Jason Bentley of LA-based KCRW.

Don't get me wrong, Vegas is a great stop for DJs around the globe to play. The clubs are massive and headlining DJs can pull in tens of thousand or event hundreds of thousands of dollars for a single gig. But don't get it twisted: Vegas is a great venue city. The business of EDM is firmly based in Los Angeles. Everyone in the business knows that.

EDIT: Here's Pete Tong of BBC Radio 1 fame talking about EDM and Los Angeles:
Quote:
Los Angeles is now a major business hub (if not the biggest) for electronic music. The agencies , the labels, the management companies, the promoters , the content creation and the proximity to Las Vegas makes it a natural and vital choice..

Exactly. Vegas has some great venues - the massive clubs, the pool parties, and EDC. But the talent is all coming from other cities - LA, NYC, and London mostly. And the business is based in those cities as well.

And honestly, if you're in Vegas and not in the mood to dress up and go to a massive club, and there's not festivals going on, the options are pretty lacking. I've been in the situation there more than once where its an off-weekend (the last time was the weekend before x-mas) where we literally couldn't find any decent events that weren't big name cheese-house DJs playing at one of the big casino-based clubs. Yes, we checked the smaller clubs and lounges in downtown Vegas. Nada.

Here in LA there is literally never an off-weekend, and never an off-weekday for that matter. I don't care if its a week before Christmas, or the week of Christmas; there will always be a warehouse party downtown, or some underground loft party in the fashion district, or you'll be able to catch your favorite DJ playing randomly in some bar. The scene is here. I don't know how else to put it.

I grew up in the Bay Area and moved to Los Angeles for grad school. I loved the Bay Area but chose to try LA because 1) to try a new place 2) I was going through a rough time 3) I had a lot of friends in SF that were from LA and always raved about the place so I was curious! I moved to Santa Monica which is very beautiful! But the more and more I live in LA, I realize I just don't really like this place at all I'm staying here for love lol. Plus LA is still better than most other places, so it's not like I am being tortured. California love. I just really now realize that SF is better :/ I know this will make a lot of people mad, but hey it's just one person's opinion! There are plenty of people in LA who love it here, so who knows that could be you as well. I'm going to start off with the negatives, then end with some positives .

The negatives:

1) First and foremost, without a doubt, the biggest issue with LA is the traffic. Oh my lord you have know idea. Sitting on a street while your car doesn't move and watching the light go green,red,green,red. My school is about 8 miles away and in LA that means easily over an hour plus in a car. So SF really rules on this one because of the walkability factor and public transportation factor. If LA builds real public transportation, quality of life in the city will improve drastically! Sure the bay has it's traffic, but not like LA. It's insane here. LA has a lot to offer, but getting to it can be such a struggle!!!

2) I really struggle with the attitude of people in LA (does not apply to all people here!!!) A lot of people here are just not that cool, sorry....Of course they are awesome people here, it just takes a lot of patience and searching to find them. In LA, no one gives two ****s about your personality. Cool here means: 1) what you have/own and 2) who you know. If you possess either of these, people will like you. It's so terrible to say, but it's true. People here can also be quite rude - I think it's because they are all so stressed out because of the overpopulation so they are tired of traffic, tired of waiting in line, tired of looking for parking, tired of road rage etc. You can be the NICEST person, but the traffic will bring out the monster in you. Road rage is real here because driving places is so stressful. Making friends in LA is...hard....very hard......It was for sure easier for me to make friends in SF.

SF has it's nerdy (software geek who has no social skills, smells, and is a jerk because he doesn't know how to act, at all), definitely has it's freak show/crazy, but i still noticed that people in SF are cooler. SF is much more about the inner beauty, being cool (swag), being smart, having intelligent conversations etc. People are also nicer/more polite. Of course SF has jerks, there are snakes in every jungle, but in terms of proportion SF wins on this one again.

My other problem in LA is that people here can be really incompetent, mostly because of : 1) children of wealthy parents who don't know how to do anything for themselves, don't work, work out all day, and are losers who think they are something special because Daddy is a doctor even though they will blow through all of his money before he dies 2) lack of education. of course they are educated people here, UCLA is here, just not nearly enough. USC grad= different world. not my kind of people. I call a lot of my friends here, in secret, my, "LA babies." They wouldn't survive in many other places hehe, because they are stuck in their LA bubble and think 60 degrees is cold.

3) I personally think dating is hard in 2014. It's just so hard to meet people. Then we go online and people act weird because they can on the internet. But lemme tell you, the dating scene in LA is rough. SF is bad, but LA can be brutal. Meeting people here is hard because it's huge and a sprawl. Does LA have more eye candy than SF? Of course, hollywood is here!! It's just so much of the hotness is severely downgraded because 1) the person has a bad personality 2) is a gold digger who doesn't work and can't make box mac n cheese. You will never be in a city where you will see so many cute girls acting desperate and crazy for a relationship, it sux. Women also are quite mean to each other here (yes, women are mean to each other everywhere, but it's worse in LA). Many people say because of competition, which may be true. But whew girls here will REALLY burn you so hard!!!

Okay, now for the positives:

1) I personally like the nightlife in both cities. LA is more clubish, but has it's bars. It's also a bigger city. LA has tons of nightlife. Once again, getting to the place can be a mission, yes I'm talking 1.5 hours in traffic on a Friday night to go 10 miles lol. But LA does have some creative, cool venues and there is always something to try. Uber has made it so much better because people can actually afford it to go out places. LA has great nightlife, for sure!

SF is more barish, but has it's clubs. SF also has plenty of nightlife in my opinion. SF also has the day festival, day drinking, Bay to breakers type stuff that LA has 0. lol. North Beach festival and festivals like that in SF are so freakin cool Or just going to a park to get a buzz in shear beauty ahhhhh. Also, in SF i could always drink/smoke/ party on the streets and cops wouldn't do **** lol. Versus LA you can't (LAPD is cray). But both are great CA cities to go out and explore and have a good time!!!! SF is much prettier tho haha...but LA has beauty too.

2) LA does have the weather hehe. Personally, sometimes the constant heat, even during the winter can be over bearing. But for the most part it's always summer and spring here lol. Also, most people like warm weather all the time so I think most people would prefer LA weather. I do miss seasons but I think I'm weird on this one and 99% of the world would prefer LA weather.

3) LA is more affordable and it's been easier for me to find a job here. My money goes further here, which is great. But LA is still a coastal CA city and is by no means cheap. But SF is $$$$ lol. I also have had an easier time finding a job here because 1) People here are less educated so your degree will go much further. In SF everyone is educated because you have to have $ to live there and quite frankly, sometimes the competition will school you. People are smart in SF, no joke. There are brilliant people in LA, but once again it's a matter of proportion 2) It's a bigger city so more openings in my opinion, if you are willing to drive.

4) LA is liberal like most of CA, and if that's what you are in to, you will find it here.

5) You can drive from LA to Vegas which is cool.

6) Every once in a while you will go out to a bar and practically every girl will look like a model lollll. It doesn't mean that they are cool, but sometimes I have to say it's entertaining hahha. I had cute friends in SF too! SF has some winners for sure and they are more likely to have a job haha. LA is LA though and people put a lot of emphasis on appearance here. Sometimes the shear effort on beauty in LA makes me laugh, in a good way.

7) There are some cool people here. I met an amazing guy here (he's an immigrant from another country, came here as a teen). He and his friends are from LA and they are really cool. A LOT of people suck here, but not everyone

8) You will find plenty of people who prefer LA, you will never know unless you try! I'm just one person, with one opinion! I don't represent everyone in the world. Many people in LA are here for good (BTW CA people are all snobs!!!! SF thinks it's better, LA think it's better, SD thinks it's better, OC thinks it's better. Cali love haha). Good luck.

You really need to travel more. SF is arguably one of the most business/economy-based cities in the country, due to the tech influence. While it has a lot to see and do, I think your last sentence applies more to SF Bay Area than LA/San Diego. San Diego is mostly revolving around tourism for its theme parks, hiking, beaches, downtown nightlife (Gaslamp Quarter), great climate and beauty, and historic Old Town and the Zoo and museums nearby. Los Angeles is the undisputed Entertainment Capital of the World and the cultural center of California and the West Coast.

haha! I do live in Santa Monica but I go to school in Downtown, work in Hollywood, and my boyfriend lives in the valley. I always make it a point to see as much as this city as I can. Yes the Westside is a bubble, typically my comment of going out to bars and seeing a bunch of model looking girls. But all of LA is a bubble too in my opinion. I also think some of those comments are applicable to the whole city - like the traffic, incompetence, people aren't that cool. It's no secret that people are superficial here. Not everyone is, but a lot are! Here's some examples of what what I'm talking about. They are hilarious btw.

1) I was in the elevator at work and it was maybe a week or two after the Israeli-Gaza conflict had started this last summer. Really, by this time everyone knew about the bombing and fighting that was going on there- it was all over the news 24/7! There was a group of people in the elevator with me and one guy, in his 30s or so, says, "Is there some kind of war going on?" LOL!!! Dude I'm telling you it was intense stupidity. All of his friends stared at the ground embarrassed and didn't say anything. These things happen way more in LA than SF, trust.

2) My boyfriend just took the Bar this summer (to become an attorney) and he walked into a store to make a purchase. The cashier was being friendly and asked him how his summer was. He was like oh it sucked I took the cal state bar. Her response: "Oh yeah, I thought about becoming a bartender too, but I don't like drinking." lol!!!! She seriously thought he meant becoming a bartender. Sighs.

3) A pedestrian walked out in front of my car, with her two young kids, while I am going like 40mph. Didn't even look to check the street before crossing, with her two kids! I slammed on by breaks, swerved, she screamed, and everyone was alright and fine. But dude cmon, your dumb enough just to walk with your kids across a street in front of a car that is going 40mph and probably can't stop in time???? Sure, maybe you could have gotten a judgment against me, but does $ compensate for the death of your child??? NO! it's just the best the law has to offer you. Stupid *****, sorry.

My LA babies

San Diego's economy is a little more diverse than just tourism. Manufacturing leads the economy, followed by Military/Defense, then tourism, agriculture and tech/bio-tech. Of course it doesn't have the robust numbers and diversity of the other two cities but it is far from a one trick pony when it comes to the economy, the built and natural environment or culture.

Bars (nightlife)=SF for access, LA/SD for quality and afforability
Dance clubs (nightlife)=LA hands down
Shopping=LA
Restaurants=LA
Friendliness=SD
Activities=Depends on the activities so 3-way tie
Traffic=SD
Weather=SD
Economy=SF
Housing=SD
Lowest crime rate=SD
Cleanliness=SD
Overall Cost of living=SD
Overall:SD/LA

And about the EDM scene, pretty much all the EDM artists and labels come from LA, London, and The Netherlands. Virtually nothing from Vegas. Yeah they have the giant clubs in the casinos and EDC, but that's not where any of the main DJs come from (except 3lau). Often the Vegas club scene gets repetitive with resident DJs. LA rarely goes a single weekend without a headliner coming through town. Many times I had to choose who to see because I couldn't afford to see everyone. There would be at least one DJ performing every night Wednesday-Saturday, sometimes with 3 different DJs playing 3 different clubs on a Friday or Saturday that I would have to choose from. When you have so many raves/festivals to choose from because your budget isn't unlimited, you know you're in LA.

So yeah, if EDM is your genre, there's no better place in the country, maybe the world, than LA. Chicago (the birth place of house music) and NYC are close behind in the US.

I never said San Diego revolves only around tourism; I said MOSTLY. Although, that might not be the case, but tourism certainly is a major part of their industry.

That's a pretty painful story to hear. Good luck for him. I left SoCal because the legal job market is particularly stiff there.
