Houston city limits are huge, its over 2.5 times bigger than Chicago in land area. Houston is double the size of NYC in land area as well.

"Chicagoland" is not Chicago city, but Chicago MSA, which is exactly the same land area as Houston MSA.

No, the gap is not as large as you think, the poster said that Houston will pass Chicago in 40 years. Houston will probably grow what... 1.5-2million people in the next 10 years? Sounds realistic to me.
