We used to do something similar when I was a child in Jamaica. Fly into Miami in the morning, shop all day, spend the night, then head back home the day after. Many fellow Jamaicans did the same. Same day turnaround though is something that I never really heard of anyone doing.
Miami does have a quick stopover and shop draw throughout the Caribbean. People think its because Caribbean folks love Miami, but its really just because its close and gives us access to things you cant find at home. Its more of a convenient destination, rather than a special or interesting one to most people.
True. But it's actually the Europeans and Latin-Americans, Israelis, and Canadians that love Miami. They're the ones who fuel the int'l numbers. No use in someone flying all the way from Buenos Aires, or Rio, or Paris, just to shop at Sawgrass Mills for a day, and go home. They fly into Miami for leisure, fun, business, or to visit family.
If you look at the amount of international carriers flying into SFO vs. Orlando Int'l, it is.
That has absolutely nothing to do with it.
Do you realize that Orlando has two International Airports? A lot of European and Canadian charter flights come into Sanford-Orlando International, and most people outside of Florida have never heard of it.
Given how much people from the UK love Disney World (they're not coming over because they find Orlando so interesting), Canadians and Brazilians as well, I am not that surprised Orlando is higher than San Francisco. NYC doesn't even have the network of flights to the UK that MCO does - London Gatwick, Manchester, Cardiff, Birmingham, Glasgow and flights to Belfast and London Stanstead coming online very soon.
On certain days of the week, Virgin Atlantic is sending 5 747-400s into MCO. The way Virgin has these planes configured is geared towards tourists as they seat 455 people. Compare the 744s they send to MCO out of Gatwick and Manchester with Virgin's normal 744s based out of Heathrow. The heathrow planes seat 367 people and feature a larger number of upper class seats.
Disney World is a huge destination no doubt. I remember hearing Emirates started up service to Orlando and everybody thought Miami would be the first Florida city to be served by them.

Give it time. Emirates has huge expansion plans and barring a US government interference, they will be adding service to places like Miami, Atlanta, Detroit and Philadelphia.

4 international airlines at Sanford. Most of them seasonal on charter airlines. No Canadian airlines whatsoever.
23 international carriers at MCO (Orlando Int'l) and 33 at SFO (including United which is a hub for it's Asia ops.) No domestic airlines fly internationally to MCO but Delta starts San Paolo this fall.
