^^^tell that to New York's financial and tech sectors. In fact, New York companies including ad agencies and PR firms probably "look to SF" at least as much as they do LA as well considering SF is a much larger corporate power center.
Economically, I don't see how you can say LA is the "clear alpha" on the west coast when SF's top industries are largely the same as New York's, excepting two: media/film, and fashion.
Los Angeles needs this/\ kind of buzz and critical mass in a technical field in order to be taken more seriously by tech and finance people. LA should do what London and NYC do, create fake buzz and launch misleading media campaigns portraying themselves as right on the heels of Silicon Valley.
SF undoubtedly. The Tech sector without any question is one of the most significant American influences on the world and wields significant influence on the world markets.
The Northern Cali region has surpassed Southern Cali as the most important region in Cali in the recent past with the decentralization of the Hollywood - most of the movies are now made out of LA in NOLA, ATL and Canada..
Lol so now the thread about Chicago vs SF is now LA vs SF, having moved on from NYC/London vs SF. Gotta love CD.
To be fair, like LA, Chicago doesn't get top college graduates either. The bigger point is that SF does well among people who can choose where they want to live. It's probably a bigger draw among elite groups than any city other than NYC.

It is undeniable that LA trumps SF overall, but I love both cities. SF is "Alpha-" While LA is classified as "Alpha" and at Kearney's list of world class cities 2014 ranks SF 22nd. And L.A. 6th in the world. But SF is undeniably world class.

I don't know where you get your information, but SF did not in no way surpass L.A. as the more important region.

So getting back to Chicago ago vs. SFBA....
I think virtually anything more said in Chicago's defense.... SF will WIN... DID WIN. Because of Silicon Valley. The only city SF does not beat in C-D is NYC. SF supporters WILL NOT LET JUST SF PROPER TO OTHER CITY PROPERS, STAY THERE. So the WINNER IS SF.
Now if someone sees a reason SF SHOULD NOT WIN.... again because of MIGHTY Silicon Valley? Let them post...... .
