Boreal/Temperate forest might be better looking than the Desert (and that's debatable)...But it has many attributes that I don't like....Boreal Forrest often have terrible insect plagues (Mosquitoes, Black Flies, Ticks, Deer Flies etc) where as Desert areas are basically free of these annoying insects (it's too dry and not enough water/humidity for them to exist).....Which is great
Nevada basically has no Ticks/Mosquitoes which is a huge plus.....

So I guess i'm confused, are you saying Nevada is more scenic because it has less bugs?

What good is "scenic" if you can't take advantage of that scenery through hiking, fishing, camping, mountain biking?
Nevada is very scenic and beautiful and you don't get blitzkrieged by Mosquitoes, Black-flies, and Ticks every time you go hiking or camping....Michigan and most of the Midwest and Northeast are full of annoying irritating insects....The West Coast and especially the Southwest (Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico etc) is much better.....
I love desert hiking for that very reason....MUCH less irritating insects due to low amounts of standing water, very low humidity, and high dry heat.....
Who doesn't take advantage of nature in Michigan because of bugs? He was right, and you should have just acknowledged it or ignored it and moved on.
Nevada has moments of that unmatchable western grandeur, but most of the state is ugly and brown and lifeless to my eyes. Michigan also has many areas of vast wilderness, especially in the UP, and unlike the desert there is water everywhere. And its own moments of grandeur, like Sleeping Bear, Pictured Rocks, Porcupine Mountains, Huron Mountains, Keweenaw, etc.

In the end you could argue that these two states are just too different to say which one is better. Both are great examples of scenic beauty in the regions they occupy. As you said Nevada is a great example of western grandeur. John Wayne would feel right at home there. On the down side parts of it look like the surface of the moon.
Michigan like most Midwest states is green and there are no areas that naturally look that bad. However there are several man made disasters in that state. Detroit looks like a scene from a post apocalytic movie. Other cities there are not much better. However a great deal of it is forest and lakes, and the Great Lakes are a world class geologic feature. I gave it the edge earlier because the beauty here is more widespread than it is in Nevada. However like I said earlier it really is not fair to compare them. It really is like comparing apples and oranges.

There is no right or wrong in a purely opinionated question such as this (some people prefer desert scenery more than Lake/Forrest scenery... so shocking)....Try again Sparky....And yes hiking without annoying (and possible disease transmitting) insects pestering you is an obvious advantage that Nevada has over Michigan...
And the answer is yes their are people who don't like to hike in Michigan during peak bug season....Absolutely no question about it....

This would be an absolutely relevant opinion if the poll was "which state has more bugs to make the scenery less enjoyable".

Exactly - this is about scenery, PERIOD. Dude should back away or relent, but it's easy to tell he's a masochist, so maybe he'll at least be entertaining (since he's not at all informative or relevant to this thread) in the future.
Agreed that these 2 states are about as different as you can get in the lower 48, especially in terms of dry/wet & temperature. That's why I like this matchup - ridiculous, but interesting to think about.
Nevada is more then just the desert people that don't know much about Nevada would think it's just some desert but it's really not. There are mountains, lakes, and plenty of things to see and do in Nevada that it often doesn't get recognized for. I don't know much about Michigan other then great lakes and it's somewhere I would never want to be, especially in the winter, so my vote goes to Nevada.
