I'm with Dawn in that the weather is exaggerated in terms of the winter and the area is prepared to remove it anyway. Right now, we just got snow this winter and it will probably melt by the end of the week.
Same in terms of what there is to do, even though, I think there are things the area could highlight more and improve on.
OP, this is the Westcott neighborhood that was mentioned earlier and it is on the city's East Side, just east of Syracuse University. That means that if you want to walk to events at the University from the neighborhood, you can: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0401...7i13312!8i6656
You can also bus it to see professional theater nearby at Syracuse Stage or Downtown and you would be close to 3 hospitals. Further east is largely middle class, with a good degree of diversity, as you have people affiliated with the hospitals and colleges that still live in that area.
Here are some suburban school districts that aren't too far from these neighborhoods and that appear to fit other criteria: Brighton Central School District
I'm in the same boat, but I've heard very good things about it from people that live/lived there, even though, it is in relation to its size and its location is pretty good(mountains, lakes and Montreal an hour away).
I guess if the OP doesn't mind small, but close to his criteria in Upstate NY, Geneva may be a place to look into. Pretty diverse for its size, with improving public schools and has the college presence with Hobart College. Geneva | Uniquely Urban
Cambridge, Somerville and JP are the closest thing to a "New Agey, green" vibe you will find near Boston. Like another poster said, Somerville has more artists per capita than any city in the nation except for NYC.
Thank you so much, everyone. Living in indecision so long was getting painful. So I chose the Triangle area of North Carolina as the best compromise of all my preferences. Will begin driving there in a few days...stopping along the way at many cities I've wanted to visit. It has still been awesome learning more about other places such as upstate New York and I look forward to visiting there and others in the future.
Boulder winters are milder than Northampton / Amherst.
Boulder has much more outdoor activities than others you have mentioned. Northampton/Amherst is a great community and less expensive than Boulder.
